Immigration Law: Current Constitutional and Civil Rights Issues

Description

This course explores issues related to the constitutional and civil rights of immigrants. The first part of the quarter is spent studying the statutory framework regulating the admission of non-citizens and the constitutional principles that govern immigration law and policy. The course then examines selected current issues that may include: restrictions on federal court jurisdiction over immigration matters, detention of non-citizens, public and private discrimination on the basis of alienage, labor and workplace rights of immigrant workers, refugee and asylum law, some post-9/11 issues, and local and state laws targeting immigrants. Whenever possible, matters pending in the Supreme Court will be incorporated into the course and guest lecturers will be invited to share their perspectives.
