Shocking Attack on American University of Afghanistan, ALEP’s Partner in Kabul

In an unprecedented attack in Afghanistan, the American University of Afghanistan (AUAF) was the target of a terrorist assault that took the lives of 13 students, faculty, and staff. Despite the regular violence and bloodshed in the country, universities had been exempt from such attacks. This was a devastating loss not only for Afghanistan but also for Stanford, which has a close partnership with AUAF’s Law Department though the Afghanistan Legal Education Project. Law professor Naqib Ahmad Kphulwak and law student Jamshid Zafar were among those killed in the attack. The tragedy has highlighted the extreme challenges involved in, and the sacrifices of people committed to, promoting rule of law in Afghanistan.
