CodeX Fellow Dr. Lance Eliot’s Paper Selected for Harvard AI Conference

CodeX Fellow Dr. Lance Eliot’s paper titled “The Neglected Dualism of Artificial Moral Agency and Artificial Legal Reasoning in AI for Social Good” was selected for discussion at the AI for Social Good Workshop hosted by the Center for Research on Computation and Society (CRCS) at the Harvard School of Engineering. The workshop, that takes place July 20-21, 2020, aims to explore how artificial intelligence can contribute to solving social problems in a wide array of domains.

The paper topic arose from Dr. Eliot’s recently published book AI and Legal Reasoning Essentials (available now). The selected paper examines the recent practice of embedding of Artificial Moral Reasoners (AMR) into AI systems and argues for the additional parallel inclusion of Artificial Legal Reasoners (ALR). Dr. Eliot’s dual approach to optimizing AI reasoning can improve the quality of decision making by diversifying the considerations a system makes prior to rendering an output or a decision.

Following is an abstract of the paper:

“A neglected dualism is occurring in AI for Social Good involving the lack of encompassing both the role of artificial moral agency and artificial legal reasoning in advanced AI systems. Efforts by AI researchers and AI developers have tended to focus on how to craft and embed artificial moral agents to guide moral decision making when an AI system is operating in the field but have not also focused on and coupled the use of artificial legal reasoning capabilities, which is equally necessary for robust moral and legal outcomes. This paper addresses this problematic neglect and offers insights to overcome a substantive prevailing weakness and vulnerability.”

Dr. Eliot’s paper will be discussed on the second day of the virtual workshop. Please click here for more information and here to register for the conference.

Dr. Eliot is a world renowned expert in artificial intelligence with regular publications appearing in Forbes and AI Trends in the areas of artificial intelligence and autonomous vehicles. He has previously served as an adviser to the Congressional Vice-Chair of the U.S. Congressional Committee on Science, Space, & Technology, a professor at the University of Southern California (USC), and as Arbitrator for the American Arbitration Association. Dr. Eliot also specializes in startups and has served as a venture capitalist with a major VC firm.
