Steve is a founding partner of Gunderson Dettmer. Steve, who is based in Silicon Valley, heads the firm’s Tax and Venture Capital and Private Equity Fund Groups. His practice encompasses all areas of general corporate and partnership income taxation and partnership law with particular emphasis on (i) forming and representing US and international venture capital and private equity funds and structuring other partnership and joint venture arrangements and (ii) structuring mergers, acquisitions and other reorganizations.
Steve is one of the country’s leading authorities on issues related to the formation and operation of both U.S. and international venture capital and private equity funds and other partnership arrangements, and frequently lectures and publishes on those topics. Organizations and publications for which Steve has presented or published include: the Venture Capital Journal, the Kauffman Fellows Program, Stanford Law School, the New York Capital Roundtable, the Bank of America Venture Fund CFO Roundtable, the Institute for International Research, the American Bar Association, the California State Bar, Practicing Law Institute, Financial Research Associates LLC and the International Association of Financial Planners. From 1988 to 1991 he lectured as an Adjunct Professor in the Golden Gate University, Masters of Taxation Program. He is also a contributing editor to two treatises: The Acquisition and Sale of the Emerging Growth Company: The M&A Exit and Formation and Financing of Emerging Companies.
Prior to co-founding the firm in 1995, Steve was the partner in charge of Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison’s Palo Alto Tax Group. He was also an auditor with Deloitte Haskins & Sells (now Deloitte & Touche).
Steve received his J.D. from the Stanford Law School. He earned his B.S. in accounting from the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign, where he graduated with Highest Honors. Steve is admitted to practice in California.
