SUMMARY:Challenging Impunity: International Law\, Advocacy\, and Accountability in Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Amid mounting challenges to the international rules-based order and a longstanding pattern of impunity\, the pursuit of justice and accountability in Palestine requires creative and strategic thinking to overcome political\, legal\, and diplomatic hurdles. How can international human rights law\, strategic advocacy\, and a range of international and domestic legal and policy mechanisms be leveraged to challenge systemic impunity?\n\nJoin SIHRLA and LSJP for a conversation on law\, strategy\, and justice featuring Omar Shakir\, Executive Director of Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN) and former Israel and Palestine Director at Human Rights Watch. Drawing on his experience leading frontline human rights advocacy in Palestine and the Middle East\, Shakir will describe the ongoing atrocities in Palestine and explore how civil society and advocates are using legal mechanisms and practical strategies to challenge impunity and fight for justice and accountability under international law.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/challenging-impunity-international-law-advocacy-and-accountability-in-palestine/\n\nThis event is open to the Stanford community.\n\nRegister: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfDj3EL_q5kLkrSHf2cga5n8tHKrFyPG7aemzaE7zqpjKkwGA/viewform?usp=publish-editor

SUMMARY:Policy Lab Workshop | Introduction to Systems Thinking
DESCRIPTION:Virtually every public policy has causes and consequences beyond those that are intended or immediately visible. This is true of criminal law policies that use algorithmic predictions of flight before trial; environmental policies involving greenhouse gas emissions and conventional pollutants; and social and health policies that address homelessness\, institutional racism\, and the distribution of vaccines\, to name just a few examples. The causes of the problems that these policies seek to address are complex. As a result\, these policies often fail and sometimes have unintended adverse consequences. “Systems thinking” is a framework that describes the web of associations in which such policies reside\, with the goals of understanding the multiple causes of problems and designing policies that lead to stable\, positive changes. Understanding systems thinking and systems change is a core skill for policymakers. Participants in the workshop are expected to do about an hour’s advance work. \nTaught by Professor Paul Brest\, Director of the Stanford Law and Policy Lab.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/policy-lab-workshop-introduction-to-systems-thinking/\n\nThis event is open to the Stanford community.\n\nRSVP Here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScpGB74N9RD5vWApY6rXSkS2Lh68WyLQaua0r78SHRjUAIpyQ/viewform?usp=sharing&ouid=112426182535181036296

SUMMARY:Promoting Peace in Israel-Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation with two inspiring peacebuilders – one Palestinian\, one Israeli – dedicated to promoting a peaceful resolution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.  Although they are each deeply connected to their Israeli Jewish and Palestinian communities\, they reject both the status quo in Israel-Palestine and the division and polarization that characterize much of the discourse about the situation in the region.  These peacemakers from the PeaceWorks movement reject the dehumanizing “us vs. them” narratives that sow conflict and division and instead advocate for a shared future that unlocks the full potential of both peoples and ensures a Middle East where all can live in safety and dignity.  They also seek to empower voices that foster depolarization in the discourse in order to build support for actionable solutions that promote Israeli-Palestinian coexistence. \nLunch will be provided. \nAbout the Speakers: \nMohamad Jamous is a Palestinian peacebuilder and international speaker based in Ramallah\, West Bank. For more than 15 years\, he has worked across Palestinian\, Israeli\, Muslim\, Jewish\, and Christian communities through dialogue\, interfaith engagement\, youth leadership\, and grassroots peacebuilding initiatives. His work focuses on dignity\, justice\, human connection\, and creating spaces for meaningful dialogue across conflict. He has represented his work on international platforms including the United Nations\, the Parliament of the World’s Religions\, and the Paris Peace Forum. \nAriel Markose is a peacebuilding strategist and social impact leader with extensive experience in building organizations\, forging partnerships across sectors\, and turning vision into initiatives that work.  As Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer of Amal-Tikva\, she focuses on strengthening the infrastructure\, leadership\, and partnerships that peacebuilding needs in order to grow into a field capable of deep and lasting change within and between Israeli and Palestinian societies.  Before Amal-Tikva\, she directed the Jerusalem Model\, a citywide network of social activists\, and held senior leadership roles at several nonprofit organizations. \nAllen Weiner is Senior Lecturer in Law and Director of the Stanford Program on International and Comparative Law.  He also serves as the Director of the Stanford Center on International Conflict and Negotiation.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/promoting-peace-in-israel-palestine/\n\nThis event is open to the Stanford community.\n\nREGISTER: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc7xMQQC91kgEufNTTA8h0q_0IaHGOGttvkLIHW84aCS_2vjQ/viewform?usp=dialog

SUMMARY:Climate Week Event: Is Environmental Review Worth the Wait?
DESCRIPTION:NEPA and its California counterpart\, CEQA\, require the government to study a project’s environmental effects and hear from the public before building or approving it. Proponents argue those reviews give communities a voice and expose potential harms. Critics point to those same process being used to delay green energy\, transmission lines\, and apartments near transit. \nProposed reforms have ignited a fierce debate. The Senate’s Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act (BAAJA) would cap the window for NEPA lawsuits and speed transmission siting\, and California’s Prop 45 would sharply limit CEQA review and litigation. \nOur speakers discuss what environmental review accomplishes\, what it costs\, and what these reforms would change. Professor Deborah Sivas directs Stanford’s Environmental Law Clinic and has spent her career litigating for environmental protection. Professor Diego Zambrano studies how Americans enforce law through private lawsuits\, teaches a Stanford practicum on infrastructure and housing permitting\, and is the author of the forthcoming book How Americans Enforce the Law.\n\nhttps://forms.gle/AkPpAFinoFLkDh3NA\n\nThis event is open to the Stanford community.\n\nRegister: https://forms.gle/h5JCuZfEH39EvHLFA

SUMMARY:Achieving Liftoff for Commercial Space: A Finance Perspective with Bruce Cahan
DESCRIPTION:Rockets\, satellites\, and space infrastructure cost billions to build and can take decades to recoup their initial investment. Venture capital has fueled much of the ongoing commercial space boom\, with larger institutions such as banks\, insurers\, and public markets also beginning to participate in the space economy. What will it take to finance the next generation of space ventures? \nJoin the Stanford Space Law Society for a conversation with Bruce Cahan\, a lecturer in Stanford’s Department of Management Science & Engineering and the d.school\, and a Stanford Law School CodeX Fellow. SUMMARY:American Caesarism: Confronting an Executive Unbound
DESCRIPTION:American Caesarism examines whether the United States faces risks similar to those that transformed the Roman Republic into an autocracy under Julius Caesar—namely\, the concentration of power in a single charismatic leader who claims to embody the popular will while circumventing traditional institutional constraints. During Donald Trump’s presidency\, scholars and commentators invoked this framework to analyze his norm-breaking behavior: his attacks on judicial independence\, attempts to personalize executive agencies\, rejection of electoral outcomes\, and cultivation of direct loyalty from supporters over institutional allegiance. \nThe Neukom Center for the Rule of Law and the Constitutional Law Center welcome Gregg Nunziata\, the Executive Director of the Society for the Rule of Law\, to expand on this concept and his article in the Atlantic The Age of American Caesarism.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/american-caesarism-confronting-an-executive-unbound/\n\nThis event is open to the public.\n\nRegister: https://forms.gle/oh9MD8AJZbhHXrNk7

SUMMARY:AI Priorities for Boards of Directors 2.0
DESCRIPTION:This five-part online course provides board directors\, executive officers and legal counsel with a practical\, board-level framework for understanding and overseeing AI as it rapidly becomes a core enterprise capability. Participants will examine how the AI landscape is evolving and build a working foundation in the technologies\, business models\, and capabilities shaping adoption today.  \nDATES: \n\nSeptember 23\nOctober 7\nOctober  21\nNovember 4\nNovember 18\n\nThe course moves from AI fundamentals to governance\, including a practical governance checklist and the distinct oversight challenges presented by AI-native companies; explores AI economics\, costs\, metrics\, tokenomics\, and ROI so leaders can better evaluate investment and performance; and addresses the expanding landscape of AI-enabled cybersecurity threats\, data risks\, and enterprise vulnerabilities. It also examines the evolving regulatory\, legal\, fiduciary\, and liability environment surrounding AI. Throughout the course\, directors and officers will develop the vocabulary\, questions\, metrics\, and governance frameworks needed to challenge management constructively\, assess AI-related opportunities and risks\, establish appropriate accountability\, and make more informed strategic decisions about where AI is creating—or potentially destroying—enterprise value. \nImportantly\, this is the second iteration of the course\, building on and expanding the topics addressed in the first. It reflects the rapidly evolving AI landscape\, with updated coverage of the technologies\, governance frameworks\, regulatory developments\, risks\, and strategic considerations that are shaping how boards oversee AI today.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/ai-priorities-for-boards-of-directors-2-0-2/\n\nThis event is open to the public.\n\nRegsiter to Attend: https://stanford.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_c_vQQv5pT8SCg_vOJJTdJQ#/registration

SUMMARY:Deepfakes: What Boards & Executives Need to Know
DESCRIPTION:Deepfakes are getting harder to spot and easier to create. What began largely as a reputational and political concern is quickly becoming an operational business risk\, with companies confronting executive impersonation\, financial fraud\, fake job candidates\, fabricated evidence\, and new threats to identity and authentication. \nDrawing on a session first presented at Stanford Directors’ College\, Breon Peace\, Partner at Cleary Gottlieb\, and Douglas Levin\, Executive Fellow at Harvard Business School and Fellow at the Rock Center for Corporate Governance at Stanford Law School\, will take a fresh look at the rapidly evolving deepfake landscape and its implications for companies\, boards\, and senior leaders. \nWhat happens when seeing and hearing are no longer enough to know what is real? Breon and Doug will examine how companies should think about trust and authentication in an environment where convincing synthetic content can be created in real time\, and what boards\, senior executives\, and legal leaders should be asking now about preparedness\, response\, and oversight.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/deepfakes-what-boards-executives-need-to-know/\n\nThis event is open to the public.\n\nRegister to Attend: https://stanford.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN__MX3tPCVSoW0C4URwsiWow#/registration

SUMMARY:A Legacy of Illegal Infrastructure: Fish Passage Laws in Oregon\, California\, and Washington
DESCRIPTION:Join SLS alum and leading water law expert at UC Davis\, Karrigan Börk for a discussion on illegal infrastructure and failed fish passage and ecosystem protections on the West Coast. There is a long history of laws in California (and other states) that tried to protect fish passage and other aspects of ecosystems before the 1970s\, but they almost all failed. Through this lens\, Börk examines what successful environmental law requires and how our accepted history of environmental law isn’t quite right. \nBio \nKarrigan Börk is a Professor of Law and Director of the Center for Watershed Sciences at UC Davis. Professor Börk graduated with Distinction and Pro Bono Distinction from Stanford Law School in 2009\, and completed his PhD dissertation in Ecology at UC Davis in September 2011. He received the Shapiro Family Award in 2011 as the Outstanding  PhD Graduate in Ecology at UC Davis. He clerked for Tenth Circuit Chief Judge Mary Beck Briscoe\, U.S. District Court Judge Julie Robinson\, and Judge Janice Karlin on the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Kansas. \nProfessor Börk graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Kansas in 2002 and was named a Truman Scholar in 2001 and a Switzer Fellow in 2010. Professor Börk’s publications run the gamut from the definitive text on the history and application of California Fish and Game Code Section 5937 to a hatchery and genetic management plan for spring-run Chinook salmon. Professor Börk is currently examining legal and ethical issues in ecological restoration. His past work has focused on the management of guest species\, those invasive species that managers invite in and make comfortable\, and on the evolution of law via administrative actions. He is currently working on local governance issues in ecosystem management. \nRead more about Karrigan’s work here. \nLunch will be provided to those who RSVP.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/a-legacy-of-illegal-infrastructure-fish-passage-laws-in-oregon-california-and-washington/\n\nThis is a Stanford Law School community event.\n\nPlease RSVP Here: https://forms.gle/vrhEkwRUJLmZ2qM4A

It reflects the rapidly evolving AI landscape\, with updated coverage of the technologies\, governance frameworks\, regulatory developments\, risks\, and strategic considerations that are shaping how boards oversee AI today.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/ai-priorities-for-boards-of-directors-2-0-3/\n\nThis event is open to the public.\n\nRegsiter to Attend: https://stanford.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_c_vQQv5pT8SCg_vOJJTdJQ#/registration

DESCRIPTION:Come join your classmates\, Director of Academic Success Sarah Brim\, and “celebrity guests” — including TAs and 2Ls who have had your same professors and are available for feedback and questions — in an informal coffee shop style setting (expect free food and some ambient noise) where you can dedicate a chunk of time to any task you’ve been stuck on or just one that you want to get out of the way before the weekend.  Come for as long or short as you’d like and as early or as late as you’d like! \nI’d encourage you to use these times to try outlining / assigned practice problems or midterms so you can take advantage of the informal feedback from our 2Ls and 3Ls\, but feel free to use the time however you find most useful. \nTo facilitate these emails and to help us ensure that we have enough food\, please RSVP by Sunday at 5 pm the week prior to each study hall.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/1l-study-cafes-2/\n\nThis is a Stanford Law School private/or invitation only event.\n\nRSVP: https://forms.gle/8z6keanSLpTWVnAb8
