SUMMARY:Lawyers’ Monopoly Webinar Series 1: Conceptualizing Legal Services Regulation
DESCRIPTION:A new volume\, edited by Rhode Center Co-Directors and Stanford Law School professors David Freeman Engstrom and Nora Freeman Engstrom (and available open access on Cambridge Core)\, brings together leading legal scholars and practitioners to propose new conceptual frameworks for reform\, drawing lessons from other professions\, industries\, and places\, both within the United States and across the world. Rethinking the Lawyers’ Monopoly: Access to Justice and the Future of Legal Services seeks to help shape and steer the coming revolution in the legal services marketplace. \n\n\nTo bring these discussions off the page\, the Rhode Center is launching a series exploring various facets of the lawyers’ monopoly. This first session sets the stage\, considering how best to frame the many issues at the intersection of legal services regulation and access to justice. With the understanding that more lawyers doing more work will not close the justice gap\, stakeholders are embracing a more holistic and nuanced gaze that expands beyond the simple supply of lawyers. This webinar will explore diverse frameworks to guide how we think about the changing market for legal services. \nModerator: Malka Herman–Executive Director of the Deborah L. Rhode Center on the Legal Profession at Stanford Law School \n Panelists (listed alphabetically): \n\nNora Freeman Engstrom–Ernest W. McFarland Professor of Law at Stanford Law School & Co-Director of the Deborah L. Rhode Center on the Legal Profession\nBridget M. McCormack–President and CEO of the American Arbitration Association-International Centre for Dispute Resolution\nW. Bradley Wendel–Edwin H. Woodruff Professor of Law at Cornell Law School\n\nWe invite you to register for the entire webinar series: \n\nLawyers’ Monopoly Webinar Series 2: Lessons from the Field: On-the-Ground Efforts to Effect Positive Regulatory Innovations \nLawyers’ Monopoly Webinar Series 3: The Comparative Lens\nLawyers’ Monopoly Webinar Series 4: TBA\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/conceptualizing-legal-services-regulation/\n\nThis event is open to the public.\n\nRSVP Now!: https://stanford.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_I029qIJ1RB-1kaC9IHyUzw

SUMMARY:Principles Under Pressure: Former DOJ Lawyers on Power\, Ethics\, and Democracy
DESCRIPTION:The Deborah L. Rhode Center and the Neukom Center present this panel of former Department of Justice lawyers\, Troy Edwards\, Liz Oyer\, and Stacey Young\, for a candid conversation with Professor Pam Karlan about professional responsibility inside the federal government during periods of intense political strain. Drawing on their experiences serving—and leaving—the Department during the Trump administration\, the panelists will reflect on the ethical obligations of government lawyers\, the limits of institutional independence\, and the moments when legal principle collides with political power. The discussion will also examine broader questions about democratic resilience\, the role of lawyers in safeguarding the rule of law\, and what these experiences mean for the next generation of public servants.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/principles-under-pressure-former-doj-lawyers-on-power-ethics-and-democracy/\n\nThis event is open to the Stanford community.\n\nRegister: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdiV3leAYuB1LfsHgoh1saBiqpoD2io4zkPqYnYVHr7Bfe46w/viewform?usp=dialog

SUMMARY:Why Nothing Works: Fukuyama and Dunkelman on the Abundance Paradox
DESCRIPTION:In an era of unprecedented material wealth and technological capability\, why do our institutions seem increasingly incapable of delivering basic services? Why does it take a decade to build a train station\, or years to acquire permits for housing construction? \nJoin renowned political scientist Francis Fukuyama and author Marc Dunkelman for an illuminating conversation exploring one of the defining puzzles of our time: the growing gap between our society’s abundant resources and our declining ability to get things done. Drawing on Dunkelman’s latest book and Fukuyama’s decades of work on political order and institutional decay\, this fireside chat will explore the root causes of institutional sclerosis – from bureaucratic bloat to the rise of the “vetocracy” – and discuss what it might take to rebuild state capacity and restore our ability to solve collective problems in the 21st century. \nCo-sponsored by the Stanford Abundance Group. \nThe Stanford Bookstore will be onsite selling copies of Why Nothing Works by Marc Dunkelman.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/why-nothing-works-fukuyama-and-dunkelman-on-the-abundance-paradox/\n\nThis event is open to the public.\n\nRegister Today!: https://forms.gle/8A8t33A96WB8VVAS7

SUMMARY:Stanford Bootcamp: Building AI Agents in Law
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, Apr. 11 (9:00am- 5:00pm) – Sunday\, Apr. 12\, 2026 (9:00am-9:00pm) \nRegister by March 3\, 2026.\nLimited to Stanford students (Law\, CS/Engineering\, GSB). Space is limited. \n\nIn this hands-on accelerated class\, interdisciplinary teams design and prototype agentic AI applications at the intersection of technology and law. In small teams of Law\, CS/Engineering\, and Business students\, you’ll receive structured instruction and expert coaching to produce: 1) a functional prototype\, and 2) a pitch narrative\, both tuned for the Stanford Law x LLM Hackathon (Day 2) to compete versus other teams. \n\nHow do you turn the latest GenAI models into reliable\, enterprise-grade agents?\nWhich legal-tech problems are “startup-sized” now—and how do you pick the right wedge?\nHow do you design around model limits (accuracy\, privacy\, IP\, compliance) to ship safely?\n\nYou’ll tackle these questions with guidance from lecturers and invited GenAI experts (past guests from OpenAI\, Google\, Apple\, and Meta). Working in small teams\, you’ll develop a GenAI startup concept\, then refine and pitch it at the open Stanford Law x LLM Hackathon (Day 2) to a panel of AI entrepreneurs and academics. No prior AI experience required. No academic credit is offered. \nClass taught by: \n\nJay Mandal is a Stanford CodeX fellow and Guest Lecturer (sixth year teaching this AI and law class at Stanford); was head M&A lawyer at Apple\, COO of SAP’s Analytics and AI Business\, and CEO/co-founder of Google Ventures-funded legal tech startup.\nRoland Vogl is Executive Director of both CodeX – the Stanford Center for Legal Informatics\, and the Stanford Program in Law\, Science and Technology\, and a Lecturer at Stanford Law School specializing in the areas of legal informatics\, IP law and innovation.\nAparna Sinha is a Stanford Engineering alum who has led AI product teams at Vercel and Capital One as SVP\, is an investor/advisor at PearVC\, and built a $B+ business at Google Cloud.\n\nQuestions? Email co-organizers Jay Mandal and Roland Vogl at AILawBootcamp@gmail.com. \nClass sponsored by CodeX – The Stanford Center for Legal Informatics and Stanford CS+Social Good.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/stanford-bootcamp-building-ai-agents-in-law/\n\nThis event is open to the Stanford community.\n\nRegister here!: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfvwcFO_BYu3wTgCO8VL6vmi_TF9P3ma1E4nrW4oIXqH9N-Iw/viewform

SUMMARY:Lawyers’ Monopoly Webinar Series 2: Lessons from the Field: On-the-Ground Efforts to Effect Positive Regulatory Innovations
\n\n\n\n\nTo bring these discussions off the page\, the Rhode Center has launched a four-part webinar series exploring various facets of the lawyers’ monopoly. Our first session sets the stage\, considering diverse frameworks to guide how we think about the changing market for legal services. This second session focuses on the existing market for legal services\, where numerous reforms are already off and running. A handful of states are leading the pack\, enacting revolutionary programs that open the legal profession to outside investment and permit nonlawyer provision of legal services. This webinar canvases a subset of existing reforms and surfaces lessons to help guide further experimentation. \n\nWe invite you to register for the entire webinar series: \n\nLawyers’ Monopoly Webinar Series 1: Conceptualizing Legal Services Regulation\nLawyers’ Monopoly Webinar Series 2: Lessons from the Field: On-the-Ground Efforts to Effect Positive Regulatory Innovations\nLawyers’ Monopoly Webinar Series 3: The Comparative Lens\nLawyers’ Monopoly Webinar Series 4: TBA\n\n \n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/lessons-from-the-field-on-the-ground-efforts-to-effect-positive-regulatory-innovations/\n\nThis event is open to the public.\n\nRSVP Now!: https://stanford.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_CyAYoGq_SLKP-nIu3SlpHg

SUMMARY:Ex Parte Young Redux
DESCRIPTION:When the main challenge to Texas’s then-unconstitutional abortion ban failed after a restrictive Supreme Court ruling in 2021 because there was no appropriate state official for the plaintiffs to sue\, one professor wrote that “[w]ere it not for sovereign immunity\, the logical defendant . . . would have been the state of Texas.”  This Constitutional Conversation draws from research challenging that assumption in the face of ascendant state “bounty” schemes\, like S.B. 8\, that rely on members of the public to implement unconstitutional laws.  Professor Crocker’s article Ex Parte Young Redux explores the development of the doctrine permitting federal courts to enjoin state officials from enforcing unlawful state statutes—and advocates extending that doctrine to allow suits against states themselves in limited circumstances.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/ex-parte-young-redux/\n\nThis event is open to the public.\n\nRegister Today!: https://forms.gle/FhhLpX4W28jW9Cha7

SUMMARY:Lawyers’ Monopoly Webinar Series 3: The Comparative Lens
\nTo bring these discussions off the page\, the Rhode Center has launched a four-part webinar series exploring various facets of the lawyers’ monopoly. Our first session sets the stage\, considering diverse frameworks to guide how we think about the changing market for legal services. The second focuses on existing reforms in the market for legal services. This third session applies a comparative lens\, focusing on lessons to be learned from other industries and other places\, regarding both loosening restrictions on the legal services market and responding to the rise of new providers and technologies. \nWe invite you to register for the entire webinar series: \n\nLawyers’ Monopoly Webinar Series 1: Conceptualizing Legal Services Regulation\nLawyers’ Monopoly Webinar Series 2: Lessons from the Field: On-the-Ground Efforts to Effect Positive Regulatory Innovations\nLawyers’ Monopoly Webinar Series 3: The Comparative Lens\nLawyers’ Monopoly Webinar Series 4: TBA\n\n \n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/the-comparative-lens/\n\nThis event is open to the public.\n\nRSVP Now!: https://stanford.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_SDFp9lBOThGrXeABlffRaA
