Michael Lawrence, Competition Counsel at Google
Please RSVP here.
Join Michael Lawrence, Competition Counsel at Google Inc. for a discussion of big data and competition between companies. The collection of user data by providers of online services such as Google, Facebook, Amazon and Apple has recently become a hot topic in antitrust debates both in the U.S. and the European Union. At issue is whether the collection of large amounts of user data — sometimes referred to as “big data” — can lead to markets “tipping” to dominant online companies. Is access to data a barrier to the entry of new rivals? What role, if any, should antitrust law play?
Michael joined Google in 2011. He handles foreign antitrust investigations and litigation, and he also provides competition counseling to product teams. In 2013, he spent six months in the London office where he focused on European competition issues. Before joining Google, Michael was a competition attorney at Intel Corporation from 2005 to 2011. Outside of his professional work, Michael is lead editor of the forthcoming edition of the ABA's Intellectual Property and Antitrust Handbook. He previously served for three years as Editor-in-Chief of Antitrust and Intellectual Property, an ABA publication.
Lunch will be provided.
