- This event has passed.
In May 2008, then President Lula da Silva of Brazil announced that a group of Latin American nations would move toward developing a common currency, just as many European countries have adopted the Euro as their currency. Recently, however, the Euro has come under extraordinary pressures, leading some observers to question whether the European common currency can survive.
SLS alumni and guests are invited to join GSB alumni for an interactive evening with GSB Professor Robert Flanagan, Konosuke Matsushita Professor of International Labor Economics and Policy Analysis (Emeritus). Professor Flanagan will discuss what these recent developments tell us about the wisdom of a common currency for Latin American nations.
Topics include the following:
- What are the advantages and disadvantages of a currency union?
- Which countries belong in a well-constructed currency union? Which countries do not?
- What key problems emerged to undermine the Euro?
- Are Latin American countries likely to encounter the same problems?
We hope that this will be an interactive event with alumni contributing their observations on the issues raised by Professor Flanagan.
Cost is $40USD per person and includes dinner. Register with your alumni username and password by Monday, January 23.
