Dean Magill and Professor Mills host a screening of The Return, an award-winning documentary film about prisoners returning to society after long prison sentences. The Return focuses on reforms to California’s Three Strikes law, which were written in part by Stanford Law School students, and the film features work of the Stanford Three Strikes Project.
The film chronicles criminal justice reform through the eyes of those on the front lines–prisoners suddenly freed, families turned upside down, reentry providers helping navigate complex transitions, and attorneys and judges wrestling with an untested law. The Return recently won top honors as favorite documentary at the TriBeCa Film Festival in New York City. The filmmakers and others involved in the film will lead a discussion about documentary film-making, social change, and criminal justice reform after the screening.
