In all parts of the world, human rights and environmental abuses are taking place as a result of the direct or indirect action of corporations. Yet, victims of corporate-related abuses still struggle to obtain justice and as a result, impunity prevails. There is a growing movement, however, to create, promote and defend legal frameworks to ensure corporations respect human rights in their global operations. This panel will enable us to hear from two leading voices in the movement. Each speaker will also discuss their career path and advice for students on breaking into the field.
Natalie Bridgeman Fields, Founder and Executive Director of Accountability Counsel, is one of the world’s experts on international accountability for human rights and environmental abuses. Natalie guest lectures at law schools, universities and in training programs on international law, international financial institution accountability, and use of U.S. courts to litigate human rights and environmental claims. Previously, she served as a consultant to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (“EBRD”), where she designed and implemented the review of the EBRD’s accountability mechanism. Through public and internal consultation, Natalie authored the 2008 policy governing the Project Complaint Mechanism. As a consultant to the World Bank Inspection Panel in 2000, Natalie worked closely with Panel members on an investigation of a World Bank project in Ecuador.
