SUMMARY:Climate Week Event: Is Environmental Review Worth the Wait?
DESCRIPTION:NEPA and its California counterpart\, CEQA\, require the government to study a project’s environmental effects and hear from the public before building or approving it. Proponents argue those reviews give communities a voice and expose potential harms. Critics point to those same process being used to delay green energy\, transmission lines\, and apartments near transit. \nProposed reforms have ignited a fierce debate. The Senate’s Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act (BAAJA) would cap the window for NEPA lawsuits and speed transmission siting\, and California’s Prop 45 would sharply limit CEQA review and litigation. \nOur speakers discuss what environmental review accomplishes\, what it costs\, and what these reforms would change. Professor Deborah Sivas directs Stanford’s Environmental Law Clinic and has spent her career litigating for environmental protection. Professor Diego Zambrano studies how Americans enforce law through private lawsuits\, teaches a Stanford practicum on infrastructure and housing permitting\, and is the author of the forthcoming book How Americans Enforce the Law.\n\nhttps://forms.gle/AkPpAFinoFLkDh3NA\n\nThis event is open to the Stanford community.\n\nRegister: https://forms.gle/h5JCuZfEH39EvHLFA
