Pursuing a Career in International Law
John Bellinger is the former Legal Adviser to the U.S. Department of State (2005-2009) and, before that, Legal Adviser to the National Security Council (2001 – 2005). Today, he is a partner in the national security and public international law practices of the Arnold & Porter law firm, was a key adviser on many critical national security issues during his tenure in government.
Mr. Bellinger will host a roundtable discussion with students on how to pursue careers in international law. In addition to his past government experience, Mr. Bellinger today has an active private law practice representing individuals, corporations, and sovereign governments in litigation in U.S. courts and before international institutions. He has extensive experience in U.S. foreign relations litigation involving the Alien Tort Statute, the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, the immunities of foreign governments and government officials, and the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments. He also advises clients on other public international law matters, including international humanitarian law and human rights law and treaty law.
