Professor Romero will speak on judicial selection methods and their impact on the composition of the judiciary. He will focus on New Mexico and compare the relatively new (1989) judicial selection method with the previous method of partisan election of judges. Having served as chair of the judicial nominating commissions for all of the courts in New Mexico and having written the rules of procedure for the commissions, Professor Romero will offer some perspectives on the new system. In particular, he will compare how women and minority lawyers have fared in their efforts to become judges under the old and new systems for judicial selection.
