Regardless of the field, policy writing can be an integral aspect of public interest and public service work. Come participate in a workshop led by Dr. Luciana Herman designed to teach you the basics of policy writing through examples and group discussion.
All SLS students are welcome. This workshop is not open to the general public.
Please RSVP so we know how many to expect: http://www.stanford.edu/dept/law/forms/Hermanwrtg.fb
Interested students should also email Dr. Herman at lherman@law.stanford.edu with their policy experience and interests so she can tailor the workshop to your needs. (And don’t worry no prior experience is necessary to attend the workshop, just list your interests if you are a policy newbee!)
Luciana Herman, Lecturer in Writing and Rhetoric, teaches policy communications courses and workshops through the Policy Lab at Stanford Law School. Her teaching, research, and consulting help young policy makers, entrepreneurs, and leaders develop strong communications, advocacy, and writing skills. In addition to policy writing and communications courses at Harvard University and now at Stanford, she also helped to build the curriculum for the Harvard Kennedy School Communications Program, and served as a Head Preceptor in the Harvard College Expository Writing Program.
Dr. Herman has many years of experience advising graduate students and undergraduates on their academic, professional, and personal life paths. Dr. Herman’s academic interests include American political speech and party formation, racial formation, immigration policy, and the policies and public speech that shaped the American revolutionary and Federalist periods. Raised in Arizona, Dr. Herman follows Southwest politics with a particular interest in the political realignments associated with immigration and the rise of the new west.
Dr. Herman began her career in communications with the National Water Alliance, a Washington, D.C., nonprofit, research think tank that advised congressional legislators on water policy. At the NWA, she wrote speeches for congressional members, researched and reported on new developments in water policy and environmental remediation, and helped to organize national symposia. Dr. Herman then earned her PhD in English, with a focus on political rhetoric, at the University of California, Berkeley. She is now working on a writing manual for public policy makers and completing a book on the impact of the Haitian Revolution on early American party formation, immigration policy, and political speech.
