Have you wondered about whether running for elected office is the right choice for you? Have you been curious about what it is that a legislator, mayor, or school board member might do day to day?
If so, the Levin Center for Public Service and Public Interest Law and the Center for the Legal Profession are co-hosting a boot camp to provide information and concrete skills as you contemplate this option.
On Friday, February 3, in the late afternoon, elected officials with JDs will be on hand to discuss their career paths, how a law degree has benefited their service through elected office, and some lessons learned from their own campaigns. Included in the speakers will City of Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, City of Berkeley City Councilmember Sophie Hahn (SLS ‘88), AC Transit Board Member Elsa Ortiz, and Santa Clara District Attorney Jeff Rosen. We will also have a panel of speakers who have played non-elected roles in public service and campaigns.
On Saturday, February 4, we will run an all day training on the nuts and bolts of running for office, covering topics ranging from developing your personal narrative to developing a campaign budget and fundraising to volunteer recruitment and field organizing. We will also offer a targeted discussion session about specific issues that need to be considered by people of color, women, and LGBTQ candidates.
Participants are encouraged to attend both days of the event. This event is for open to SLS students and alumni. You must be registered to attend this event.
