On April 22, Soh Young In, SFI Financial Innovation Lead, and Andrew Peterman, Executive Director of Stanford’s Center for Integrated Facility Engineering, will discuss their study, which highlights a variety of roles that companies can play in supporting the decarbonization of electricity grid systems global low-carbon transition beyond simple mitigation of a company’s direct operational footprint.
Companies are buying clean energy at a record pace and beginning to seek investment opportunities to enable a low-carbon business future. Yet, many companies lack a clear vision for the multiple types of specific impact roles they are positioned to assume given a company’s combination of resources, motivations, and direct actions undertaken. As a result, companies often remain preoccupied with reducing their direct environmental impact and may miss out on opportunities to invest in decarbonization initiatives that result in system-wide and scalable impacts to build the low-carbon economy of the future. This study specifies seven impact-oriented roles a company can assume beyond mitigation: A company can mobilize its investment capital to seed, scale, and sustain clean energy projects. It can also drive organizational change by acting as an advocator, infrastructure builder, educator, and coalition builder. In and Peterman propose a framework for companies to build a sustainable impact roadmap by aligning its sustainability goals, resources, and investment actions.
