A talk by Jeff Ardron of the Institute for Advance Sustainability Studies
Jeff Ardron is a Senior Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Sustainability (IASS), based in Potsdam, Germany. His research is focussing on global maritime governance, particularly in the high seas, with an eye on how we will have to adapt in this new era dominated by human impacts and activities –the Anthropocene. He is examining both conventional ‘inside the box’ governance, as well as external solutions, such as disruptive technologies and their potential to circumvent existing institutional bottlenecks. Interested in meaningful stakeholder participation, in earlier work he developed analytical methods to reliably incorporate in marine / maritime planning local knowledge side by side scientific data. Previously, he was Director of the High Seas Program for Marine Conservation Institute in Washington DC. He maintains his involvement in Canada, where he is from, as President of the Board for the Pacific Marine Analysis and Research Association (PacMARA). Themes of ongoing interest include: the bridging of science, technology, law, and policy; and, decision-making with imperfect and incomplete knowledge. He is a frequent guest lecturer, and has consulted widely, recently for planning projects in West Africa, Chile, Canada, and the UK.
