Human Rights, Criminal Justice and Prison Reform in the Americas Fellowship (Non-Recurrent)

Our Fellow, Mirte Postema, is working alongside James L. Cavallaro, the Center’s Director and Member of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, on a far-reaching study of best practices in the area of criminal justice reform, focusing on prison reform and the reduction of pre-trial detention in the Americas.

Combining a study of international human rights norms with in-depth case-studies of successful reforms in Latin America, this project aims to contribute to a paradigm shift away from imprisonment as the principal solution for criminal behavior. Additionally, it proposes parameters for more humane and cost-effective treatment of detainees.

As part of this project, SHRC engages in academic and public (policy) debates on these issues throughout Latin America, and collaborates with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and with authorities in the Americas interested in implementing such reforms.
