The Miles L. Rubin Public Interest Award recognizes an alum whose outstanding work has advanced justice and social change in the lives of vulnerable populations on a community, national, or international level. In particular, the Rubin Award is intended to highlight concrete and sustainable approaches and solutions to a societal problem.

Only alumni who graduated within the past ten years, currently work in public service, and are current or past participants in the Miles and Nancy Rubin Loan Repayment Assistance Program LRAP are eligible to be nominated. Candidates may self-nominate or be nominated by any person or group that knows the nominee well. The nomination must include a written statement of no more than 2 pages describing the contributions the nominee has initiated or furthered during their career thus far. The statement should be written, signed and dated by the nominator(s). Nominations may also include no more than 3 brief letters of endorsement, not to exceed 2 pages each.

Past recipients include Katrina Eiland, JD ’10, the Managing Attorney of the ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project’s California Office; Stephanie Rudolph, JD ’11, Deputy Director of JustFix.nyc; David B. Owens, JD/MA ’10, a partner at Loevy & Loevy; and Tamika Butler, JD ’09, principal of Tamika L. Butler Consulting LLC.

Nominations will be evaluated on the following criteria: (1) demonstrated initiative and leadership that achieves results; (2) implementation of a social justice solution to a societal problem; and (3) commitment to a long-term institutional vision that is focused on sustainable solutions to societal problems.

Nominations for the award will be reviewed and the recipient(s) selected by a Selection Committee composed of the Dean of the Law School, the Associate Dean for Public Service and Public Interest Law, and a member of the Rubin Family.

The award will be presented at the annual Public Service Awards dinner held every fall at Stanford Law School, in conjunction with presentation of the law school’s National Public Service Award.
