SUMMARY:Lawyers’ Monopoly Webinar Series 2: Lessons from the Field: On-the-Ground Efforts to Effect Positive Regulatory Innovations
DESCRIPTION:A new volume\, edited by Rhode Center Co-Directors and Stanford Law School professors David Freeman Engstrom and Nora Freeman Engstrom (and available open access on Cambridge Core)\, brings together leading legal scholars and practitioners to propose new conceptual frameworks for reform\, drawing lessons from other professions\, industries\, and places\, both within the United States and across the world. Rethinking the Lawyers’ Monopoly: Access to Justice and the Future of Legal Services seeks to help shape and steer the coming revolution in the legal services marketplace. \n\n\n\n\nTo bring these discussions off the page\, the Rhode Center has launched a four-part webinar series exploring various facets of the lawyers’ monopoly. Our first session sets the stage\, considering diverse frameworks to guide how we think about the changing market for legal services. This second session focuses on the existing market for legal services\, where numerous reforms are already off and running. A handful of states are leading the pack\, enacting revolutionary programs that open the legal profession to outside investment and permit nonlawyer provision of legal services. This webinar canvases a subset of existing reforms and surfaces lessons to help guide further experimentation. \nModerator:  David Freeman Engstrom–LSVF Professor in Law at Stanford Law School & Co-Director of the Deborah L. Rhode Center on the Legal Profession \nPanelists: \n\n\nMatthew Burnett–Director of Research and Programs for the American Bar Foundation’s Access to Justice Research Initiative; Adjunct Professor of Law at Georgetown University Law Center; visiting scholar with the Justice Futures Project in the Sanford School of Social and Family Dynamics at Arizona State University\nStacy Rupprecht Jane–Director of i4J (Innovation for Justice) & Associate Scholar\, University of Arizona; Adjunct Instructor\, University of Utah\nAndy Kvesic–CEO of Aprio Legal\nRebecca Sandefur–Professor in the Sanford School of Social and Family Dynamics and (by courtesy) in the Sandra Day O’Conner College of Law at Arizona State University\nCraig Shank–Principal\, Independent Legal and Consulting Advisor at CES.World PLLC\n\n\n\nWe invite you to register for the entire webinar series: \n\nLawyers’ Monopoly Webinar Series 1: Conceptualizing Legal Services Regulation\nLawyers’ Monopoly Webinar Series 2: Lessons from the Field: On-the-Ground Efforts to Effect Positive Regulatory Innovations\nLawyers’ Monopoly Webinar Series 3: The Comparative Lens\nLawyers’ Monopoly Webinar Series 4: Charting the Future of Legal Services \n\n \n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/lessons-from-the-field-on-the-ground-efforts-to-effect-positive-regulatory-innovations/\n\nThis event is open to the public.\n\nRSVP Now!: https://stanford.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_CyAYoGq_SLKP-nIu3SlpHg

SUMMARY:Principles Under Pressure: Former DOJ Lawyers on Power\, Ethics\, and Democracy
DESCRIPTION:The Deborah L. Rhode Center and the Neukom Center present this panel of former Department of Justice lawyers\, Greg Rosen\, Liz Oyer\, and Stacey Young\, for a candid conversation with Professor Pam Karlan about professional responsibility inside the federal government during periods of intense political strain. Drawing on their experiences serving—and leaving—the Department during the Trump administration\, the panelists will reflect on the ethical obligations of government lawyers\, the limits of institutional independence\, and the moments when legal principle collides with political power. The discussion will also examine broader questions about democratic resilience\, the role of lawyers in safeguarding the rule of law\, and what these experiences mean for the next generation of public servants.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/principles-under-pressure-former-doj-lawyers-on-power-ethics-and-democracy/\n\nThis event is open to the Stanford community.\n\nRegister: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdiV3leAYuB1LfsHgoh1saBiqpoD2io4zkPqYnYVHr7Bfe46w/viewform?usp=dialog

SUMMARY:Defamation & Democracy: Litigating the 2020 Election
DESCRIPTION:Join the Plaintiffs’ Law Association and the Rhode Center on the Legal Profession for a lunchtime talk with Davida Brook ’10\, a partner at Susman Godfrey\, on litigating defamation lawsuits related to election integrity. Professor Nora Engstrom will moderate. \nDavida was lead counsel for Dominion Voting Systems in its lawsuit against Fox News Network\, asserting the network broadcast false claims that Dominion rigged the 2020 presidential election; that case was settled in April 2023 for a historic $787.5 million\, on the eve of trial. Davida and her team have since pursued similar defamation claims on behalf of Dominion against other defendants—including Newsmax Media\, Mike Lindell\, Sidney Powell\, Rudy Giuliani\, and One America News Network—and have generated millions of dollars of additional settlements. \nIn addition to her groundbreaking work on defamation and elections\, Davida also has a wealth of experience across other legal frontiers: she is lead counsel in the Open AI MDL\, representing the New York Times and other plaintiffs in their suits against Microsoft and OpenAi for copyright infringement. The landmark complaint marks the first time a newspaper publisher has sued the developers of a large-language model\, alleging that responses to user queries are unlawfully reproducing the newspaper’s content. And\, Davida is co-leading a class action against PornHub parent company\, MindGeek\, over allegations that MindGeek violated federal sex trafficking and child pornography laws by knowingly posting\, enabling the posting of\, and profiting from thousands of pornographic videos featuring persons under the age of 18. \nLunch will be served to those who RSVP.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/defamation-democracy-litigating-the-2020-election/\n\nThis event is open to the Stanford community.\n\nRegister: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe2gbQ2PX6xNTVFkNtkScaa9LNC2C4uEHnuxXys-RAy-snX2Q/viewform?usp=publish-editor

SUMMARY:Litigating Against Uber and Roblox: A conversation with Alex Walsh and Sarah London
DESCRIPTION:Join the Plaintiffs’ Law Association and the Rhode Center on the Legal Profession for a lunchtime conversation with Alex Walsh ’01 and Sarah London—two powerhouse trial lawyers who have led MDLs nationwide—on their groundbreaking work against Uber and Roblox. Both Alex and Sarah serve on the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee for the Uber Sexual Assault MDL\, which seeks to hold Uber accountable for sexual assaults committed by its drivers and has broken new ground in terms of making good law on an employer’s vicarious liability for sexual assault. Alex and Sarah will be trying the first federal bellwether case against Uber later this year. Both are also leading the new litigation against Roblox\, the kids’ gaming platform\, on behalf of children and their families who were sexually exploited by predators on the app. \nProfessor Nora Engstrom will serve as moderator. \nAlex Walsh graduated from Stanford Law School in 2001 and clerked for Merrick Garland (back when he was on the DC Circuit) and Justice Breyer on the Supreme Court before practicing on the defense-side. Five years\, she made the switch over to the plaintiffs’ side and has never looked back. \nSarah London\, in addition to serving as Co-Lead Counsel in the Uber MDL\, where she leads a majority female Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee\, also served as Co-Lead in the Juul MDL\, which resulted in an unprecedented $100 million settlement. In line with her passion for women’s advocacy\, Sarah is also an innovator in cases involving failures in the fertility industry\, having taken on genetic testing companies and IVF product manufacturers for the loss of eggs and embryos. Sarah was a partner at Lieff Cabraser before moving over to Girard Sharp earlier this year.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/litigating-against-uber-and-roblox-a-conversation-with-alex-walsh-and-sarah-london/\n\nThis event is open to the public.\n\nRSVP: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdKp6kQQPEzsqWbyeSvI8VncW35y3UhJkonABKAx97ESYSRWA/viewform?usp=header

SUMMARY:Judgment Day with the Rhode Center
DESCRIPTION:Millions of Americans face consumer debt collection lawsuits each year\, but most never mount a defense. The system is difficult to navigate\, legal help is unaffordable\, and default judgments allow creditors to seize assets and garnish wages—often even when claims are legally defective. Courts have tried manual review\, but it is slow\, inconsistent\, and still permits unlawful judgments that strip wages and destabilize families. \n In the Judgment Day research sessions\, participants will play the role of a judge in a case review simulation to reveal the different ways in which courts currently fail and succeed in identifying fraudulent or procedurally void judgments. These findings will shed light on systemic injustices under current review procedures\, help shape concrete recommendations for review reform\, and inform the design of a state-of-the-art assistive tool for default judgments. The research session will be four hours\, including training and hands-on case review.  Participants will recieve a $100 gift card and dinner from Zareens\, and will be invited to a celebratory dinner at David and Nora Freeman Engstrom’s house on October 22nd.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/judgment-day-with-the-rhode-center/\n\nThis is a Stanford Law School private/or invitation only event.\n\nRegister: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe89ij7wlT1YdhG-hwmixXgVQVSxDMMnSTo5mw5RFCgxB94_g/viewform
