SUMMARY:Elements of Policy Analysis Workshop: Quantitative Data Research
DESCRIPTION:Quantitative data can provide detailed evidence to complement and support qualitative data research. Stanford offers tremendous quantitative resources\, including help in analyzing that data. This workshop introduces the array of resources with specific attention to a Policy Lab case study grounded in quantitative research. This is part of Elements of Policy Analysis (Law 7846) and open to all in the Stanford community. \nThis workshop will be led by SLS Reference Librarian Sergio Stone.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/elements-of-policy-analysis-workshop-quantitative-data-research/\n\nThis event is open to the Stanford community.\n\nPlease RSVP Here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe8bKpttUG65EIbGIs1f7jWB8MuXCltaR6BcVWXAdxxMA4yoQ/viewform?usp=dialog

SUMMARY:Elements of Policy Analysis Workshop: Introduction to Systems Thinking
DESCRIPTION:Virtually every public policy has causes and consequences beyond those that are intended or immediately visible. This is true of criminal law policies that use algorithmic predictions of flight before trial; environmental policies involving greenhouse gas emissions and conventional pollutants; and social and health policies that address homelessness\, institutional racism\, and the distribution of Covid vaccines\, to name just a few examples. The causes of the problems that these policies seek to address are complex. As a result\, these policies often fail and sometimes have unintended adverse consequences. “Systems thinking” is a framework that describes the web of associations in which such policies reside\, with the goals of understanding the multiple causes of problems and designing policies that lead to stable\, positive changes. Understanding systems thinking and systems change is a core skill for policymakers. Participants in the workshop are expected to do about an hour’s advance work. \nTaught by Paul Brest\, Director of the Stanford Law and Policy Lab.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/elements-of-policy-analysis-workshop-introduction-to-systems-thinking/\n\nThis event is open to the Stanford community.\n\nClick here to RSVP: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe8bKpttUG65EIbGIs1f7jWB8MuXCltaR6BcVWXAdxxMA4yoQ/viewform?usp=dialog

SUMMARY:Elements of Policy Analysis Workshop: Interdisciplinary Research
DESCRIPTION:Researching public policy requires synthesizing information from many different sources and disciplines: legal research; scientific data; economic predictions; findings and recommendations from NGOs and blue-ribbon panels\, think tanks\, and government agencies. All of these and more guide policymakers. Join this workshop to learn how to identify and access non-legal sources of information and understand techniques to evaluate and interpret resources in unfamiliar disciplines. This is part of Elements of Policy Analysis (Law 7846) and open to all in the Stanford community. \nThis workshop is led by SLS Crown Reference Librarian Gracy Lo.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/elements-of-policy-analysis-workshop-interdisciplinary-research/\n\nThis event is open to the Stanford community.\n\nPlease RSVP Here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe8bKpttUG65EIbGIs1f7jWB8MuXCltaR6BcVWXAdxxMA4yoQ/viewform?usp=dialog

SUMMARY:Elements of Policy Analysis Workshop: Using AI to Organize Research\, Outline a Draft and Identify Gaps
DESCRIPTION:Tame the chaos: efficiently move from research overload to targeted first draft with AI. In this session\, you’ll identify practical ways AI can help organize research materials and pinpoint themes; use AI to generate a working outline from notes\, sources\, or earlier drafts; and efficiently engage with AI to identify gaps\, missing authorities\, or areas needing deeper research from a working draft of a research paper. \nThis workshop will be taught by Will Huggins\, Assoc. Director of Head of Library Technology & Innovation\, and Taryn Marks\, SLS Reference Librarian.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/elements-of-policy-analysis-workshop-using-ai-to-organize-research-outline-a-draft-and-identify-gaps/\n\nThis event is open to the Stanford community.\n\nPlease RSVP Here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe8bKpttUG65EIbGIs1f7jWB8MuXCltaR6BcVWXAdxxMA4yoQ/viewform?usp=dialog

SUMMARY:Elements of Policy Analysis Workshop: Writing Policy Reports
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to organize research and data for compelling policy memos and briefing papers that illustrate underlying findings and principles. This workshop will highlight examples from past Policy Lab projects with attention to the differences between legal advocacy and policy analysis. You will learn general principles grounded in Robert K. Yin’s foundational works on writing policy case studies\, including how to focus on process over outcome\, building a strong contextual frame for the central issues\, and extrapolating underlying principles for next steps in policy research. This workshop is part of Elements of Policy Analysis (Law 7846) and open to all in the Stanford community. Contact policylab@law.stanford.edu for more information. \nTaught by Policy Lab Program Director Luci Herman.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/elements-of-policy-analysis-workshop-writing-policy-reports/\n\nThis event is open to the Stanford community.\n\nClick here to RSVP: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe8bKpttUG65EIbGIs1f7jWB8MuXCltaR6BcVWXAdxxMA4yoQ/viewform?usp=dialog
