SUMMARY:2026-27 Kirkwood Moot Court Competition LAW 7820 – Information Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Kirkwood Moot Court Board is hosting an information lunch for those interested in learning more about the annual Kirkwood Moot Competition.\n\nThe Competition is open to twenty two-person teams. At the beginning of Fall Quarter\, each team will be given the record of a case\, together with the decision of the appellate court. Each team will write a rough draft and a final draft of a brief to the Supreme Court of the United States on a particular side of the case. Then\, at the beginning of Winter Quarter\, oral arguments will be held. Each team will argue both sides of the case. Teams will advance to the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds\, with two teams advancing to the final round in February 2027. Each participant in Kirkwood receives two units of academic credit in the Fall\, one unit of academic credit in the Winter Quarter. Clinic participation in the Fall precludes participation in Kirkwood; clinic participation in Winter is generally permissible\, but check with your instructor. The Moot Court Board welcomes all interested first- and second-year students to register for the Kirkwood Moot Court Competition to be held in the Fall and Winter Quarters of 2025-26. \nPlease join us on April 29 for more information and to hear directly from the Moot Court Board. SUMMARY:Marion Rice Kirkwood Moot Court Competition – Semifinal Rounds
DESCRIPTION:The Marion Rice Kirkwood Moot Court Competition Semifinals will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday\, January 30\, in the Moot Court Room. \nThe teams will be competing before a distinguished panel of federal judges: Judge Vince G. Chhabria of the United States District Court for the Northern District of California\, Judge Loren AliKhan of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia\, as well as the Honorable Sallie Kim\, Magistrate Judge for the Northern District of California. \nThis year’s case is Project Veritas\, et al. v. Nathan Vasquez\, et al. \nThe issues are: \n\nWhether Oregon’s law prohibiting the unannounced recording of conversations violates the First Amendment.\n\nWhether the First Amendment protects the right to record.\nWhether Oregon’s law prohibiting unannounced recordings is content-based and thus subject to strict scrutiny\, which it fails.\nEven if Oregon’s law is content-neutral\, whether it nonetheless is an invalid restriction on protected speech.\n\n\n\nThis event is open to the SLS student body. We hope you will be able to join us!\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/marion-rice-kirkwood-moot-court-competition-semifinal-rounds/\n\nThis is a Stanford Law School private/or invitation only event.
