DESCRIPTION:ACS is excited to host Chief Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California for a breakfast conversation on her experiences on and journey to the bench. \nChief Judge Gonzalez Rogers has served on the federal bench for for fifteen years and has presided over various notable matters and types of complex litigation. Most recently\, she has served as the presiding judge for the Social Media Addiction Multi-District Litigation (MDL)\, which produced a landmark settlement between 47 states and Meta. Judge Gonzalez Rogers was also the presiding judge for Musk v. Altman. SUMMARY:Rule of Law Speaker Series: AI and Political Freedom
DESCRIPTION:AI safety is having a moment. Once the preoccupation of technologists and futurists\, it is now front-page news and kitchen-table conversation. This is a welcome development. But there is one crucial dimension the public conversation has yet to reach: the connection between AI safety and democracy. Without the political freedom that democracy secures\, AI cannot and will not be safe. This point is urgent\, because AI is poised to put unprecedented pressure on the very democratic institutions its safety requires. Matthew Botvinick\, Anthropic’s lead on AI and the Rule of Law and author of AI and Political Freedom\, will discuss what’s at stake and where some of the dangers lie.
