SUMMARY:SIAA Guest Lecture by Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP: Powering the Future: Energy and Technology Disputes in International Arbitration
DESCRIPTION:The global energy landscape is shifting faster than ever\, and with that transition comes a new wave of complex legal friction. As we pivot from fossil fuels to renewables\, the intersection of Energy and Technology is becoming the new frontier for International Arbitration. \nIn an era where technology is the energy strategy\, the legal community must adapt. Resolving these disputes requires more than just a deep dive into the law; it requires an understanding of the code\, the chemistry\, and the climate goals driving the change. \nThe Stanford International Arbitration Association (SIAA) is honored to host a guest lecture featuring partners from Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP on April 23 at 12:45PM. Kristen Young\, Shaimaa Hussein\, Grégoire Bertrou\, and Matthias Schrader will convene at Stanford Law School to analyze the intersection of international arbitration\, energy transition\, and emerging technologies. \nLunch will be provided by Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/siaa-guest-lecture-by-willkie-farr-gallagher-llp-powering-the-future-energy-and-technology-disputes-in-international-arbitration/\n\nThis is a Stanford Law School community event.\n\nRegister: https://forms.gle/3oRwBUkiPJjdLCTR7

SUMMARY:ESG vs. Investment Treaties: Can International Arbitration Adapt to the Climate Change Transition?
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday 16 of April at 12:45 PM for a deep dive into one of the most pressing legal frontiers of our time. We are thrilled to welcome Scott Vesel\, Partner at Three Crowns\, to discuss whether the traditional world of investment treaties can survive—and adapt to—the global climate transition. As the “Environmental” pillar of ESG moves from a corporate buzzword to a central catalyst in multi-billion dollar mining and energy disputes\, the rules of the game are being rewritten. This session will explore how international arbitration is transforming from a shield for investor rights into a high-stakes arena where climate commitments and state regulatory power collide. \nThis isn’t just a debate for international lawyers; it’s a masterclass in the systemic and commercial evolution of global markets. We will focus specifically on how the “E” and “G” of ESG are reshaping corporate governance\, investor due diligence\, and the very calculation of damages in the energy sector. Whether you are interested in the “Regulatory Collision” between states and investors or the commercial realities of the Energy Transition\, this session offers an expert look at how the legal landscape is being redrawn for a sustainable global economy.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/esg-vs-investment-treaties-can-international-arbitration-adapt-to-the-climate-change-transition/\n\nThis is a Stanford Law School community event.\n\nhttps://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc_mwUNL1n_YuiuRBqIs-_HRvlNnCXMP4hFdsGvbVHl2liy_g/viewform?usp=publish-editor: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc_mwUNL1n_YuiuRBqIs-_HRvlNnCXMP4hFdsGvbVHl2liy_g/viewform?usp=publish-editor

SUMMARY:Investor-State Arbitration Reform: Working Group III and the Cost Dilemma for Medium-Sized Investors
DESCRIPTION:As UNCITRAL Working Group III continues its multi-year mandate to reform the Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) system\, the focus has often remained on structural overhauls like a multilateral investment court or appellate mechanisms. However\, a more immediate crisis persists: the prohibitive cost of entry. \nWhile the system was designed to protect foreign investment\, the staggering legal and administrative fees—often reaching millions of dollars—have effectively sidelined medium-sized investors. For these entities\, the “right” to arbitration is often a right in name only\, as the financial risk of pursuing a claim outweighs the potential recovery. \nWe are honored to welcome Professor Noam Zamir to lead this discussion. An international arbitrator\, Associate Professor and former Visiting Professor at Stanford Law School \, Professor Zamir brings extensive expertise as an independent arbitrator and counsel who has represented both states and investors in complex international disputes. His deep scholarship on the “allocation of costs” and “affordable arbitral appeal mechanisms” provides a vital lens through which to examine the intersection of procedural reform and economic reality. \nJoin us on Tuesday 31 April at 12:45 in Room 27 for an in-depth discussion on the intersection of procedural reform and economic reality.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/investor-state-arbitration-reform-working-group-iii-and-the-cost-dilemma-for-medium-sized-investors/\n\nThis is a Stanford Law School community event.\n\nRegister: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1NAcHYGpb3ZRRPe7VZ01boRUZeFZgqpMZDPG7JsqM4F4/edit
