Summary

There is no scientific concord stating when human life begins. It is simply a philosophical or religious point of view.

Therefore the debate about abortion, similar to any other controversy, is not one solely based on science, but belief and perspective. The issue of abortion has been debated between various groups during the last few years. Some believe that it is considered murder and immoral.

The critically acclaimed ‘Freakonomics’ of 1999 discusses a study by Professor John Donohue of the Stanford University Law School and Steven Levitt of the University of Chicago. It suggested that crime rates dropped dramatically after 1991 due to the legalization of abortion in the early 1970’s. The central proposal was that the children who were not born would have much more likely to be raised in welfare and poverty under the guardianship of a young, uneducated and unwillingly single parent. Since these factors have been said to contribute to criminal characteristics, those children would have been prime candidates of criminal activity 15 to 25 years later, which is the amount of years between the early seventies and 1991.
