Professor Jayashri Srikantiah was quoted by the Daily Journal's Henry Meier about the recent ruling on immigrant rights and what it means for immigrant detainees.

In the second landmark decision on immigrant rights out of the Central District in recent months, a judge Wednesday issued a permanent injunction forcing the government to hold bond hearings for immigrant detainees who have been locked up for more than six months.

U.S. District Judge Terry J. Hatter made permanent the temporary injunction he issued late last year in Rodriguez v. Robbins et al, CV07-3239 (C.D. Cal., filed May 16, 2007), in which he ordered immigration officials to provide the bond hearings before an immigration judge.

“Today's ruling ensures that immigrants receive the basic protections of due process before the government subjects them to detention for long periods of time,” Jayashri Srikantiah, director of Stanford Law School's Immigrants' Rights Clinic who helped bring the suit, said in a statement.
