‘Our Laws: Your Life’: Hacking Their Way To A Better Criminal Justice System

Summary

It’s no secret that the criminal justice system has lagged behind in adopting technology to make it more transparent and accessible to the public.

This attitude is changing. There may be no better place to see it in action than down the Peninsula at the Stanford Law School. Here the Legal Design Lab, an interdisciplinary team composed of law students, software engineers and graphic designers, is building human-centered design into the next generation of legal products and services.

On May 7th, the California Department of Justice and Stanford Law School are sponsoring Hack for Justice Day, an all-day event that aims to support the Open Justice initiative, launched in September 2015 by California Attorney General Kamala Harris. The end-goal of this initiative is to provide data that will inform data-rich interactive graphics that can improve transparency, accountability and improve criminal justice policy by telling compelling stories.
