Professor Robert MacCoun discusses his newest practicum at SLS with The Daily Journal's Alex Shively and how the course will offer students a “forward-looking” approach to the issue of marijuana legalization and the regulation around it.

New classes starting in the spring at Santa Clara University School of Law and Stanford Law School are inviting students to discuss, research and craft forward-looking policy to help California more readily adapt to the legalization of marijuana, should that ever transpire.

Santa Clara's course is being taught by professor W. David Ball who said it aims to be a “mini think tank” on the myriad legal issues that California is likely to confront should it join the ranks of states adopting marijuana legalization policies.

Stanford professor Robert J. MacCoun had previously taught a drug policy course while teaching at UC Berkeley School of Law but said that this year's course is his first attempt to take a forward-looking approach to the issue. “Until recently it would have been hard to teach a real concrete class on this because it was only an idea that had been discussed. Right now things are changing so quickly.”

MacCoun said that his course will focus more on regulation than legal practice.
