Professor Alan O. Sykes co-wrote “Economic Foundations of the Law of the Sea” for the 104th volume of the American Journal of International Law, about the provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Targeted News Service reports:

The American Society of International Law (ASIL) announces that the fourth issue of the 104th volume of its flagship publication, the American Journal of International Law, is now available.

This issue’s lead article is “Economic Foundations of the Law of the Sea” by Eric A. Posner (University of Chicago) and Alan O. Sykes (Stanford Law School). The article proposes that the provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea are based on sound economic logic and fair principles, taking into consideration the diverse needs and capabilities of all states with regard to use of the seas. The United States is not a party to the Convention, but successive administrations, including both the Bush and Obama administrations, have pushed for Senate approval, and it is high on the current administration’s treaty priority list.
