Diego A. Zambrano

Stanford Law Assistant Professor Diego Zambrano received an honorable mention from the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) for his paper titled, “Foreign Dictators in U.S. Court.” Each year, the AALS sponsors a scholarly papers competition to encourage and recognize excellent legal scholarship by junior law faculty. A committee of established scholars reviewed 61 submitted papers with the authors’ identities concealed and selected one winner and three honorable mentions who will be honored at the AALS annual meeting on January 5, 2021.

Zambrano’s primary research and teaching interests lie in the areas of civil procedure, transnational litigation, and judicial federalism. His work generally explores the civil litigation landscape: the institutions, practices, and incentives that influence litigant choices and outcomes, including how parties in the legal system strategically shape and respond to procedural rules. Zambrano also has an interest in legal developments related to Venezuela. During 2019-2020, he led an innovative Stanford Policy Lab on “Rebuilding the Venezuelan Judiciary” and served as an advisor to the Venezuelan National Assembly.

Janet Martinez 

On November 12, the Silicon Valley Arbitration & Mediation Center (SVAMC) announced that Janet Martinez, Stanford Law Senior Lecturer, Director of Stanford’s Gould Negotiation and Mediation Program and Director of the Gould Alternative Dispute Resolution Research Initiative, was the recipient of SVAMC’s Outstanding Contribution to Technology Dispute Resolution Award. Martinez was selected by SVAMC based on her commitment to advancing alternative dispute resolution in the technology sector.

“Through Janet’s efforts, dispute resolution lawyers in the U.S. are better informed on the benefits of technology ADR and companies around the world are increasingly looking to mediation and arbitration as mechanisms for resolving technology-related disputes,” said SVAMC founder and Chairman Gary Benton. 

Martinez focuses her research and consulting on dispute system design (with Amsler and Smith, Dispute System Design: Preventing, Managing, and Resolving Conflict, Stanford University Press, 2020), online dispute resolution, sustainable groundwater management in California, and international comparative dispute resolution.
