Stanford Law Professor Jayashri Srikantiah Appointed Associate Dean of Clinical Education and Director of the Mills Legal Clinic

STANFORD, Calif., April 17, 2019 – Stanford Law School (SLS) today announced the appointment of Jayashri Srikantiah, who founded and has directed the SLS Immigrants’ Rights Clinic for the past fifteen years, to Associate Dean of Clinical Education and Director of the SLS Mills Legal Clinic, effective July 1, 2019. Srikantiah replaces Professor Juliet Brodie who has served in the role since 2013. Brodie will continue to direct the SLS Community Law Clinic.

“I am thrilled that Jayashri will take on this leadership role in our Mills Legal Clinic,” said Jenny Martinez, Richard E. Lang Professor of Law and Dean of Stanford Law School. “She has both deep institutional knowledge of our clinical program and a strong commitment to Stanford’s model of immersive clinical education and will be able to seamlessly take the reins from Juliet’s capable hands to continue to move our world-class clinical program into the future.”

“I am very excited to take on this new role,” said Srikantiah. “I strongly believe in the importance of clinical legal education for our students and I look forward to doing all I can to support the collaborative and pathbreaking work done in the Mills Legal Clinic.”

Srikantiah is the founding director of the law school’s Immigrants’ Rights Clinic. She has represented scores of immigrants facing removal from the United States, with a focus on representing immigrants with past criminal convictions.

Srikantiah has conducted impact litigation, community outreach, public education, and policy advocacy in partnership with a broad range of immigration non-profits, on issues ranging from immigration detention to protections for immigrant survivors of domestic violence. She has litigated numerous cases in the immigration courts, the federal district courts, the federal courts of appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court. Srikantiah’s litigation projects include cases seeking to establish constitutional limits on the federal government’s immigration detention practices, cases to uncover the federal government’s immigration practices, and cases relating to the immigration consequences of past criminal convictions. Srikantiah’s research and scholarly work explores the role of administrative discretion in immigration decision making in various areas as well as the pedagogy of multi-modal law clinics.

Stanford Law School has been at the leading edge of experiential learning for the past decade and a half, dramatically expanding its clinical program. The Mills Legal Clinic is a vital part of Stanford Law’s mission to prepare every student for the challenges, responsibilities and rewards of a career as a legal professional. Stanford Law School’s clinical program now includes 11 clinics operating across a wide array of substantive practice areas as well as practice types, ranging from criminal defense to Supreme Court litigation to religious liberty to education law. Students enroll in clinics full-time for a quarter, with no competing courses (a feature unique to SLS), and close to three-quarters of SLS students participate in the clinic program before graduating.

Providing individualized, hands-on learning opportunities, the intensive training in a clinic shapes future lawyers of every career aspiration, whether they choose to work in a large firm, become entrepreneurs, make policy or engage in full-time public service. The work done in the Mills Legal Clinic ranges from high-impact litigation to direct-services representation, from broad-based policy initiatives to close work with individuals and organizations—locally, nationally, and abroad.
