Stanford Law School Professor Mark Lemley and Visiting Professor and California Supreme Court Justice Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar Elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences

The American Academy of Arts and Sciences announced today that Stanford’s William H. Neukom Professor of Law and the Director of the Stanford Program in Law, Science and Technology Mark Lemley has been elected to the Academy. Stanford’s Visiting Professor of Law and California Supreme Court Justice Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar was also elected to the academy. Founded in 1780, the Academy honors exceptional scholars, leaders, artists, and innovators, and engages them in sharing knowledge and addressing challenges facing the world.

Along with eight other Stanford professors, Professor Lemley and Visiting Professor Cuéllar will be inducted into the 238th class of members at a ceremony this October in Cambridge, Mass, where they will sign the Academy’s Book of Members. Their signatures will be added to the Academy members who came before them including Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, Margaret Mead, Martin Luther King, Jr. and many others.

Stanford Law School Professor Mark A. Lemley

Professor Lemley teaches intellectual property, computer and internet law, patent law, trademark law, antitrust, and remedies at Stanford Law School. He is the author of seven books and 162 articles on these and related subjects, including the two-volume treatise IP and Antitrust. His works have been cited more than 245 times by courts, including 13 times by the United States Supreme Court, and more than 14,000 times in books and law review articles, making him the most cited scholar in IP law and one of the most cited legal scholars of all time. In addition, Professor Lemley has taught intellectual property law to federal and state judges, has testified before Congress, and has filed 48 amicus briefs before the U.S. Supreme Court, the California Supreme Court, and the federal circuit courts of appeals.

Stanford Law School Visiting Professor and Justice Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar

Visiting Professor Cuéllar began serving on the California Supreme Court in January 2015. Before serving on the Court, he was the Stanley Morrison Professor of Law and Professor (by courtesy) of Political Science at Stanford University. In addition, between 2004 and 2015, Cuéllar also held leadership positions at Stanford’s Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. A member of the Stanford faculty since 2001, Cuéllar has written books and articles on administrative law and legislation, criminal law, international law, cyberlaw, immigration, public health law, and the history of institutions.
