Families of victims in the Texas church massacre can sue the Air Force for failing to prevent the shooter from buying his gun, or at least for making the purchase easier than it should have been, legal analysts said Tuesday.

But several said a suit would be extremely difficult to win.

Regardless of legal barriers, Stanford law Professor John Donohue said he hopes to see a lawsuit that delves into the flaws of record-keeping systems that left out the names of other prospective mass killers.

“It would also underscore the weakness of not having universal background checks,” he said.
