The São Paulo Public Defender’s Office has implemented a policy that improves the access to justice for people in pretrial detention. These people are interviewed by a public defender within two to three weeks of their detention, using a gender-specific checklist. This is an important tool to collect information to better prepare their defense and to attend any immediate needs they might have, for example regarding health and family obligations.
