Faculty on Point | Professor Joan Petersilia on Solving America’s Prison Problem

Joan Petersilia is an internationally renowned criminologist who has spent over 30 years studying the performance of U.S. criminal justice agencies and has been instrumental in affecting sentencing and corrections reform in California and throughout the United States. In 2014, she was honored with the Stockholm Prize in Criminology (the Nobel Prize in criminology) for her work on prisoner reentry and supporting ex-offenders following release from prison. In this video, she first offers an overview of America’s prison challenges and then her research into prison challenges and the work that she and students at Stanford Law School have done on California’s historic prison realignment and Governor Brown’s new initiative to fund prisoner re-entry programs. 1. Very important to make legal tax payers out of ex cons. The possibility of success can be improved thru a careful screening and allocation to suitable programs of education and practice work during prison time.
In theory they can get 8hr school, 8hr work & 8hrs sleep during weekdays.

The government needs new prisons and one task will be to build new ones in series production and be hired as apprentices and later full time employees after passing exams to build them.

  2. I applaud success in this area, however I can’t help but wonder about the huge increase in local crime recently and its possible connection to this trend…
