SUMMARY:Invisible Military Bases and Prosecutions at the Border: A Conversation with Rebecca Sheff (ACLU NM) and Professor Lucas Guttentag (SLS)
DESCRIPTION:Join SIHRLA (Stanford Immigration and Human Rights Law Association) for a timely and incisive conversation with Rebecca Sheff\, Senior Staff Attorney from the ACLU of New Mexico and Professor Lucas Guttentag. \nThis event will explore the legal battles emerging from the new weaponization of invisible “National Defense Areas” that now cover 40 percent of the US-Mexico border. As the DOJ charges migrants with trespassing on unmarked military land\, prosecutors are increasingly attempting to circumvent standard legal procedures to pursue convictions\, even as local federal judges reject the frivolous charges. This discussion will examine how courts\, government agencies\, and advocates intersect in moments of extreme procedural overreach\, and will offer concrete reflections on safeguarding rights\, strengthening accountability\, and defending the rule of law.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/invisible-military-bases-and-prosecutions-at-the-border-a-conversation-with-rebecca-sheff-aclu-nm-and-professor-jennifer-chacon-sls/\n\nThis is a Stanford Law School community event.\n\nRSVP: https://forms.gle/Yt6RTw23km7GDG1i6

SUMMARY:Private Policing and Racial Power: A Discussion with Professor Ekow Yankah
DESCRIPTION:Join Criminal Law Society\, Stanford Criminal Justice Center\, Stanford Racial Justice Center\, Stanford Critical Legal Studies for a timely and thought-provoking conversation with Professor Ekow N. Yankah from the University of Michigan\, as he discusses his recent Stanford Law Review article examining the relationship between criminal law and private racist violence. \nIn his work\, Professor Yankah explores how criminal law not only responds to acts of private violence but can also legitimize and reinforce systems of racial power. By interrogating the ways in which legal doctrines sanction or fail to challenge racially motivated harm\, his analysis raises urgent questions about the role of the state\, the boundaries of policing\, and the moral foundations of punishment. \nEkow N. Yankah is the Thomas M. Cooley Professor of Law\, a professor of philosophy at the University of Michigan and the associate dean for faculty and research. His work focuses on questions of political and criminal theory and\, particularly\, questions of political obligation and justifications of punishment.  Yankah’s work has appeared in law review articles\, peer reviewed legal theory journals\, books\, and medical journals\, including NOMOS\, Ratio Juris\, Law and Philosophy\, Criminal Law and Philosophy\, Stanford Law Review\, Texas Law Review\, and the Harvard Law & Policy Review\, among others. \nWe invite the law school community to engage in this critical conversation on law\, race\, and power. \n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/private-policing-and-racial-power-a-discussion-with-professor-ekow-yankah/\n\nThis event is open to the public.\n\nRSVP Here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf6S9_hHYYeiOBCaN33PMcNJ70DexvCgwVNTU-L3ox9zVAbZw/viewform?usp=header

SUMMARY:Human Rights and Immigration Speaker Series: Challenging Immigration Enforcement Practices
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Jayashri Srikantiah (Director\, SLS Immigrants’ Rights Clinic) in conversation with Eva Bitran and Luis Nolasco (ACLU of Southern CA) and Chris Wells (IL Attorney General’s Office)\, with introduction from SLS Prof. Jennifer Chacon (Bruce Tyson Mitchell Professor of Law). \nPlease join us for a discussion of the ways in which communities are challenging unlawful ICE practices and arrests\, including through litigation and community organizing. \nChris Wells is Chief of the Public Interest Division in the Illinois Attorney General’s Office. He is currently lead counsel in Illinois v. Trump\, litigation challenging the Trump Administration’s attempt to deploy National Guard troops in Chicago. Chris has also successfully litigated against efforts to withhold federal funding because of Illinois laws limiting state and local police participation in federal civil immigration enforcement. Chris is proud to work alongside a courageous group of attorneys in the Public Interest Division who have helped bring 51 lawsuits in the last year pushing back on unlawful federal actions. Prior to joining the Illinois Attorney General’s Office\, Chris worked at Jenner & Block in Chicago and served as a law clerk to Judge Marvin E. Aspen of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Chris holds a J.D. from Stanford Law School and a B.A. in History from Yale University. \nEva Bitran is the Director of Immigrants’ Rights and a Senior Staff Attorney at the ACLU of Southern California\, where she has worked since 2017. In her current role\, Eva leads a team of litigators\, policy counsels\, advocates and organizers in using the tools of integrated advocacy to advance immigrants’ rights. She has brought and overseen landmark class actions about immigration (like Hernandez Roman v. Wolf\, which depopulated the Adelanto detention center during COVID\, Vasquez Perdomo v. Noem\, targeting suspicionless ICE and CBP stops based on race in the LA region\, and UFW v. Noem\, challenging CBP’s unconstitutional racial profiling of day laborers in the Central Valley)\, and organized advocacy campaigns (for example\, to keep ICE and CBP off Greyhound buses\, and in support of state and local sanctuary policies). Prior to joining the ACLU\, Eva worked as a trial attorney in the federal Department of Justice\, as a fellow with the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights\, and as a law clerk on the US Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. \nLuis Nolasco is a senior community engagement and policy advocate at the ACLU of Southern California\, working from the Inland Empire office. He graduated with a B.A. in psychology from California State University\, San Bernardino and was one of the co-founders of the Inland Empire Immigrant Youth Collective. He currently sits on the board of the Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice (ICIJ). His work is focused on the intersections between the criminal justice system and immigration systems. Since 2012\, he has been active in the fight to dismantle the collaboration between local law enforcement and immigration authorities\, and the fight against mass incarceration in the Inland Valleys. Luis was a leading force in the effort to eliminate 287-G agreements locally and played a key role in organizing the statewide campaign for SB54\, the California Values Act.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/challenging-ice-enforcement/\n\nThis event is open to the Stanford community.\n\nPlease RSVP: https://forms.gle/jvqLrSdYDrXfk8zH6

SUMMARY:Defamation & Democracy: Litigating the 2020 Election
DESCRIPTION:Join the Plaintiffs’ Law Association and the Rhode Center on the Legal Profession for a lunchtime talk with Davida Brook ’10\, a partner at Susman Godfrey\, on litigating defamation lawsuits related to election integrity. Professor Nora Engstrom will moderate. \nDavida was lead counsel for Dominion Voting Systems in its lawsuit against Fox News Network\, asserting the network broadcast false claims that Dominion rigged the 2020 presidential election; that case was settled in April 2023 for a historic $787.5 million\, on the eve of trial. Davida and her team have since pursued similar defamation claims on behalf of Dominion against other defendants—including Newsmax Media\, Mike Lindell\, Sidney Powell\, Rudy Giuliani\, and One America News Network—and have generated millions of dollars of additional settlements. \nIn addition to her groundbreaking work on defamation and elections\, Davida also has a wealth of experience across other legal frontiers: she is lead counsel in the Open AI MDL\, representing the New York Times and other plaintiffs in their suits against Microsoft and OpenAi for copyright infringement. The landmark complaint marks the first time a newspaper publisher has sued the developers of a large-language model\, alleging that responses to user queries are unlawfully reproducing the newspaper’s content. And\, Davida is co-leading a class action against PornHub parent company\, MindGeek\, over allegations that MindGeek violated federal sex trafficking and child pornography laws by knowingly posting\, enabling the posting of\, and profiting from thousands of pornographic videos featuring persons under the age of 18. \nLunch will be served to those who RSVP.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/defamation-democracy-litigating-the-2020-election/\n\nThis event is open to the Stanford community.\n\nRegister: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe2gbQ2PX6xNTVFkNtkScaa9LNC2C4uEHnuxXys-RAy-snX2Q/viewform?usp=publish-editor

SUMMARY:Litigating Against Uber and Roblox: A conversation with Alex Walsh and Sarah London
DESCRIPTION:Join the Plaintiffs’ Law Association and the Rhode Center on the Legal Profession for a lunchtime conversation with Alex Walsh ’01 and Sarah London—two powerhouse trial lawyers who have led MDLs nationwide—on their groundbreaking work against Uber and Roblox. Both Alex and Sarah serve on the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee for the Uber Sexual Assault MDL\, which seeks to hold Uber accountable for sexual assaults committed by its drivers and has broken new ground in terms of making good law on an employer’s vicarious liability for sexual assault. Alex and Sarah will be trying the first federal bellwether case against Uber later this year. Both are also leading the new litigation against Roblox\, the kids’ gaming platform\, on behalf of children and their families who were sexually exploited by predators on the app. \nProfessor Nora Engstrom will serve as moderator. \nAlex Walsh graduated from Stanford Law School in 2001 and clerked for Merrick Garland (back when he was on the DC Circuit) and Justice Breyer on the Supreme Court before practicing on the defense-side. Five years\, she made the switch over to the plaintiffs’ side and has never looked back. \nSarah London\, in addition to serving as Co-Lead Counsel in the Uber MDL\, where she leads a majority female Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee\, also served as Co-Lead in the Juul MDL\, which resulted in an unprecedented $100 million settlement. In line with her passion for women’s advocacy\, Sarah is also an innovator in cases involving failures in the fertility industry\, having taken on genetic testing companies and IVF product manufacturers for the loss of eggs and embryos. Sarah was a partner at Lieff Cabraser before moving over to Girard Sharp earlier this year.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/litigating-against-uber-and-roblox-a-conversation-with-alex-walsh-and-sarah-london/\n\nThis event is open to the public.\n\nRSVP: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdKp6kQQPEzsqWbyeSvI8VncW35y3UhJkonABKAx97ESYSRWA/viewform?usp=header

SUMMARY:1L Spotlight Panel Series: Tech
DESCRIPTION:For a few weeks in September\, we’ll be hosting a series of “spotlight” practice area panels. Each panel will focus on a few different practice areas that fall together under a general topic. Experienced attorneys in those areas will talk about what that practice is like – what they do day-to-day\, what they find interesting/challenging about their work\, and how they got to where they are. Wondering what appellate litigation lawyers do? Think you might like to be an M&A attorney? The Spotlight Panels are a great way to explore and compare different private sector practices. \nPanelists:\nMargaret Shyr\, Quinn Emanuel\nJim Snell\, Perkins Coie\nMarie Weisfeiler\, Desmarais\nSean Withall\, Wilson Sonsini \n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/1l-spotlight-panel-series-3-2/\n\nThis is a Stanford Law School private/or invitation only event.
