SUMMARY:Energy Policy and Energy Careers – Lunch Talk with California Energy Commission Chief Counsel Sanjay Ranchod (SLS ‘01)
DESCRIPTION:Stanford’s Environmental and Natural Resources Law & Policy Program\, Climate and Energy Policy Program (CEPP)\, and the Environmental Law Society are hosting a lunch discussion with Sanjay Ranchod\, SLS ‘01 alum and Chief Counsel for the California Energy Commission (CEC). If you are interested in energy policy and private and public sector energy careers\, join us! \nRanchod will talk about what the CEC does and how it fits into California’s larger energy policymaking/decisionmaking apparatus\, as well as the role of the CEC’s Chief Counsel’s office. He will also discuss his career path and how someone who’s interested in energy work may get into it\, what the market for budding energy lawyers might look like over the next five or so years\, and how people might get into this work. \nRanchod has more than a decade of experience in legal and policy leadership roles at clean energy companies\, including SolarCity\, Tesla\, and OhmConnect. He joined the CEC from Renew Home\, where he was the chief legal officer. He previously represented large-scale renewable energy project developers and other businesses as an attorney at Paul Hastings. Ranchod began his legal career working on complex litigation matters and served as a law clerk to Jeremy Fogel when he was a U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of California. \nRanchod was appointed by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. to the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission\, where he served as a commissioner for seven years. He has also served on a federal advisory committee for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Environmental Health and on the boards of several nonprofit organizations. \nRanchod earned his JD from Stanford Law School and graduated magna cum laude from Brown University. After college\, he was a California Senate Fellow for the Office of State Senator Byron Sher\, where he first worked on California energy law and policy. \nSponsored by: Environmental and Natural Resources Law & Policy Program\, Climate and Energy Policy Program\, and Environmental Law Society\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/energy-policy-and-energy-careers-lunch-talk-with-california-energy-commission-chief-counsel-sanjay-ranchod-sls-01/\n\nThis event is open to the Stanford community.\n\nPlease RSVP to Attend: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScHhXoXXWuL0ILCAEN_4Ss32WInt9jWn24SabYq8twsWnXXAA/viewform?usp=publish-editor

SUMMARY:ESG vs. Investment Treaties: Can International Arbitration Adapt to the Climate Change Transition?
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday 16 of April at 12:45 PM for a deep dive into one of the most pressing legal frontiers of our time. We are thrilled to welcome Scott Vesel\, Partner at Three Crowns\, to discuss whether the traditional world of investment treaties can survive—and adapt to—the global climate transition. As the “Environmental” pillar of ESG moves from a corporate buzzword to a central catalyst in multi-billion dollar mining and energy disputes\, the rules of the game are being rewritten. This session will explore how international arbitration is transforming from a shield for investor rights into a high-stakes arena where climate commitments and state regulatory power collide. \nThis isn’t just a debate for international lawyers; it’s a masterclass in the systemic and commercial evolution of global markets. We will focus specifically on how the “E” and “G” of ESG are reshaping corporate governance\, investor due diligence\, and the very calculation of damages in the energy sector. Whether you are interested in the “Regulatory Collision” between states and investors or the commercial realities of the Energy Transition\, this session offers an expert look at how the legal landscape is being redrawn for a sustainable global economy.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/esg-vs-investment-treaties-can-international-arbitration-adapt-to-the-climate-change-transition/\n\nThis is a Stanford Law School community event.\n\nhttps://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc_mwUNL1n_YuiuRBqIs-_HRvlNnCXMP4hFdsGvbVHl2liy_g/viewform?usp=publish-editor: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc_mwUNL1n_YuiuRBqIs-_HRvlNnCXMP4hFdsGvbVHl2liy_g/viewform?usp=publish-editor
