DESCRIPTION:Stanford’s Environmental and Natural Resources Law & Policy Program\, Climate and Energy Policy Program (CEPP)\, and the Environmental Law Society are hosting a lunch discussion with Sanjay Ranchod\, SLS ‘01 alum and Chief Counsel for the California Energy Commission (CEC). If you are interested in energy policy and private and public sector energy careers\, join us! \nRanchod will talk about what the CEC does and how it fits into California’s larger energy policymaking/decisionmaking apparatus\, as well as the role of the CEC’s Chief Counsel’s office. He will also discuss his career path and how someone who’s interested in energy work may get into it\, what the market for budding energy lawyers might look like over the next five or so years\, and how people might get into this work. \nRanchod has more than a decade of experience in legal and policy leadership roles at clean energy companies\, including SolarCity\, Tesla\, and OhmConnect. He joined the CEC from Renew Home\, where he was the chief legal officer. He previously represented large-scale renewable energy project developers and other businesses as an attorney at Paul Hastings. Ranchod began his legal career working on complex litigation matters and served as a law clerk to Jeremy Fogel when he was a U.S. District Judge for the Northern District of California. \nRanchod was appointed by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. to the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission\, where he served as a commissioner for seven years. He has also served on a federal advisory committee for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Environmental Health and on the boards of several nonprofit organizations. \nRanchod earned his JD from Stanford Law School and graduated magna cum laude from Brown University. Drawing on her training as a PhD in psychology\, Lisa is widely considered to be peerless when it comes to voir dire. She has written some of the best known guides on jury selection for plaintiffs’ attorneys and selected juries for some of the biggest plaintiffs’ verdicts in history. At this lunch time talk\, Lisa will teach her techniques for learning juror biases and getting jurors struck for cause. \nIn addition to being a jury selection expert\, Lisa has earned over $350 million in winning verdicts and millions more in settlements for her clients. DESCRIPTION:Please join Stanford alum Pilar Thomas for a lunch discussion that will focus on the challenges and opportunities for sovereign tribes considering clean energy investments — covering hot topics from lithium mining to new transmission routes. \nPilar Thomas (Pascua Yaqui) is a partner in Quarles & Brady’s Energy\, Environment & Natural Resources Practice Group. She focuses her practice on: \n\nTribal renewable energy project development and finance\nTribal economic development\nFederal Indian Law\nNatural resource development\nCultural resource protection\n\nPilar previously served as the deputy director for the Office of Indian Energy Policy and Programs at the U.S. Department of Energy\, where she was responsible for developing and implementing policy and program efforts within the department and federal government to promote energy development\, electrification\, and infrastructure improvement on tribal lands. \nShe is the former deputy solicitor of Indian Affairs for the U.S. Department of the Interior\, where she advised the Secretary\, Assistant-Secretary for Indian Affairs\, and other Department officials on matters related to tribes\, tribal law\, and federal Indian law. \nShe also served as the Interim Attorney General and Chief of Staff for the Pascua Yaqui Tribe and was a trial attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice\, Environmental and Natural Resources Division\, Indian Resources Section. \nPilar serves on the boards for the Foundation for Natural Resources and Energy Law and Western Resources Advocates\, and serves as Vice-Chair at-large for the Indigenous Resources Committee for the ABA Section on Energy\, Environment and Resources. \nShe is a former board member of the Native American Bar Association of Arizona\, where she served as President and Secretary. \nIn her spare time\, Pilar teaches Indian Energy Law at both the Arizona State University Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law and the University of Arizona James Rogers School of Law (but not at the same time). \nPilar received her Juris Doctorate from the University of New Mexico School of Law and her Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Stanford University (‘84).\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/tribal-sovereignty-clean-energy/\n\nThis is a Stanford Law School private/or invitation only event.\n\nThe event is at capacity; registration has closed.: https://forms.gle/sj8fJhXrBgbC85tw6
