DESCRIPTION:We want to hear from you! \nDo you have thoughts/advice/questions on neurodiversity and accessibility at Stanford Law? \nCome to this student only group discussion (and free lunch!) (RSVP here by May 25) to share wisdom on the experience of neurodiverse students on campus for the benefit of future and current students. The event will take place in Room 27 from 12:45 – 2 pm on May 26. \nAll identities and perspectives are welcome\, and we especially welcome students with lived experiences and students with intersectional identities. \nAbsolutely no personal information will be asked to be shared by attendees\, and all learned from the discussion will remain anonymous. \nAdditionally\, if you are uncomfortable speaking up or showing up to a larger group discussion or do not wish to attend for any reason\, but would still like to contribute to this discussion\, please feel free to reach out (project leader’s emails below). \nAgain\, all perspectives shared\, including the identity of students\, will be anonymized. No faculty or staff will have access to students’ identities without express permission from individual students. \n(Neurodivergent is a very broad term and generally refers to people whose brain’s function\, learn\, and process information differently than what is considered typical. A specific diagnosis is not required to be considered neurodivergent. SUMMARY:A Conversation with Judge Trina Thompson
DESCRIPTION:Join the American Constitution Society (ACS) and the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) for a conversation with Judge Trina Thompson of the Northern District of California. \nAppointed by President Biden in 2022\, Judge Thompson is a trailblazer who became the first African American woman elected to the Alameda County Superior Court in 2002. She is known for her tireless advocacy for justice and inclusion. Judge Thompson’s distinguished career spans roles as a criminal defense attorney\, public defender\, and lecturer at UC Berkeley\, where she has shaped the next generation of legal minds. She was also appointed to the Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention by President Obama in 2011. Her appointment to the federal bench in 2022 was a culmination of her long-standing commitment to upholding due process and advocating for fairness in the legal system. \nJudge Thompson will discuss her background\, career\, and path to the bench. SUMMARY:Investor-State Arbitration Reform: Working Group III and the Cost Dilemma for Medium-Sized Investors
DESCRIPTION:As UNCITRAL Working Group III continues its multi-year mandate to reform the Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) system\, the focus has often remained on structural overhauls like a multilateral investment court or appellate mechanisms. However\, a more immediate crisis persists: the prohibitive cost of entry. \nWhile the system was designed to protect foreign investment\, the staggering legal and administrative fees—often reaching millions of dollars—have effectively sidelined medium-sized investors. For these entities\, the “right” to arbitration is often a right in name only\, as the financial risk of pursuing a claim outweighs the potential recovery. \nWe are honored to welcome Professor Noam Zamir to lead this discussion. An international arbitrator\, Associate Professor and former Visiting Professor at Stanford Law School \, Professor Zamir brings extensive expertise as an independent arbitrator and counsel who has represented both states and investors in complex international disputes.
