SUMMARY:The Evolving Legal Framework for Environmental and Social Corporate Governance
DESCRIPTION:Private companies are subject to an evolving and expanding array of legal obligations to address the environmental and social aspects of their operations.  Although regulatory efforts in this area have traditionally involved voluntary standards for companies\, they are increasingly becoming mandatory.  Some legal obligations in the field\, which arise under the laws of a growing number of countries\, require companies to investigate\, disclose\, and remediate environmental and social issues.  Other laws ban the use or importation of certain products.  These regulations present compliance risk—reinforced by the traditional risk of strategic litigation—which itself is becoming more potent given the increasing array of laws/regulations on these matters.  Patrick Miller\, a leading lawyer involved in advising companies about their obligations with regard to environment and social issues\, will discuss the contemporary legal landscape regarding economic and social governance facing transnational companies.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/the-evolving-legal-framework-for-environmental-and-social-corporate-governance/\n\nThis event is open to the public.\n\nRegister: https://forms.gle/jBdxjMwULmg7EWUt7

SUMMARY:The End of Federal Climate Regulation? Environmental Law a Year into Trump 2.0
DESCRIPTION:One year into the second Trump Administration\, federal environmental policy is undergoing a dramatic shift. In what its calling “the single largest deregulatory action in U.S. history\,” the Administration has moved to repeal the EPA’s greenhouse gas Endangerment Finding\, the legal backbone of federal climate regulation under the Clean Air Act\, which would curtail the EPA’s authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions. \nIs this the end of federal climate regulation as we know it? Join us for a timely discussion with Kevin Poloncarz\, Co-Chair of Covington & Burling’s Environmental and Energy Practice Group\, and Meg Herzog (SLS 2011)\, Partner at Donahue\, Goldberg\, and Herzog\, on what this means for the future of climate and environmental law.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/the-end-of-federal-climate-regulation-environmental-law-a-year-into-trump-2-0/\n\nThis is a Stanford Law School community event.\n\nRSVP HERE: https://forms.gle/7y5v9tS5TUsYHLot6

SUMMARY:Beyond the Doctrine: Criminal Law
DESCRIPTION:Join ACS for a Beyond the Doctrine panel discussing Addressing the Peril: Seeking Better Legal Outcomes for Criminalized Survivors\, a recent report published by the Stanford Criminal Justice Center. The panel will feature Debbie Mukamal\, Executive Director of the Center\, Robert Weisberg\, Professor of Law and Faculty Co-Director of the Center\, and SLS students Wyndham Ermini and Anna Zannetos\, who contributed to the Addressing the Peril report. \nThe conversation will draw on work from the Regilla Project\, a long-running research and policy initiative that examines how survivors of intimate partner violence are criminalized\, with particular attention to women incarcerated for homicide and related offenses. Drawing on original in-prison survey research and policy analysis\, the panel will explore how core criminal law doctrines governing charging decisions\, homicide liability\, defenses\, evidence\, sentencing\, and parole often fail to account for the realities of abuse and trauma\, and what these gaps reveal about the limits of existing criminal law frameworks for addressing survivor-defendants. Lunch will be provided.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/beyond-the-doctrine-criminal-law/\n\nThis event is open to the public.\n\nRSVP: https://forms.gle/gdHk9sw2ZRmzDnmk6

SUMMARY:Race and Redistricting: Louisiana v. Callais and the Future of the Voting Rights Act
DESCRIPTION:This term\, the Supreme Court hears argument in Louisiana v. Callais about whether Louisiana’s “intentional creation of a second majority-minority congressional district violates the Fourteenth or Fifteenth Amendments to the U.S. Constitution.” The case is a major challenge to what remains of the Voting Rights Act and implicates the Court’s interpretation of the Reconstruction Amendments. \nJoin the Stanford Election Law Project for a conversation with Professor Karlan and Professor Persily about the Supreme Court’s Louisiana v. Callais case and its implications for redistricting law and democracy.\n\nLunch will be provided to those who RSVP.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/race-and-redistricting-louisiana-v-callais-and-the-future-of-the-voting-rights-act/\n\nThis event is open to the Stanford community.\n\nRSVP: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeqQalL41pqr0u8Zg7VvO9HMtt-WRCplqfZffQCudG4aXExkA/viewform?usp=header
