SUMMARY:2026-27 Kirkwood Moot Court Competition LAW 7820 – Information Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Kirkwood Moot Court Board is hosting an information lunch for those interested in learning more about the annual Kirkwood Moot Competition.\n\nThe Competition is open to twenty two-person teams. At the beginning of Fall Quarter\, each team will be given the record of a case\, together with the decision of the appellate court. Each team will write a rough draft and a final draft of a brief to the Supreme Court of the United States on a particular side of the case. Then\, at the beginning of Winter Quarter\, oral arguments will be held. Each team will argue both sides of the case. Teams will advance to the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds\, with two teams advancing to the final round in February 2027. Each participant in Kirkwood receives two units of academic credit in the Fall\, one unit of academic credit in the Winter Quarter. Clinic participation in the Fall precludes participation in Kirkwood; clinic participation in Winter is generally permissible\, but check with your instructor. The Moot Court Board welcomes all interested first- and second-year students to register for the Kirkwood Moot Court Competition to be held in the Fall and Winter Quarters of 2025-26. \nPlease join us on April 29 for more information and to hear directly from the Moot Court Board. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations\, a fellow of the Explorers Club\, and a research affiliate at MIT and Stanford. SUMMARY:Policy Lab Workshop: Introduction to Systems Thinking
DESCRIPTION:Virtually every public policy has causes and consequences beyond those that are intended or immediately visible. This is true of criminal law policies that use algorithmic predictions of flight before trial; environmental policies involving greenhouse gas emissions and conventional pollutants; and social and health policies that address homelessness\, institutional racism\, and the distribution of Covid vaccines\, to name just a few examples. The causes of the problems that these policies seek to address are complex. As a result\, these policies often fail and sometimes have unintended adverse consequences. “Systems thinking” is a framework that describes the web of associations in which such policies reside\, with the goals of understanding the multiple causes of problems and designing policies that lead to stable\, positive changes. Understanding systems thinking and systems change is a core skill for policymakers. DESCRIPTION:Please join the Climate and Energy Policy Program (CEPP) and Environmental and Natural Resources Law & Policy Program (ENRLP) for a lunch talk with Antero Garcia “On Parenting\, Decision-Making\, and the Invisible Costs of the Eaton Fire.” In January\, 100\,000 California residents evacuated their homes due to the Eaton Fire. Thousands of structures in the Pasadena and Altadena area burned to the ground in the second most destructive wildfire in California history.  Many residents are still displaced\, dealing with insurers and worrying about the health risks in their neighborhoods. Professor Garcia will discuss his recently published report on the Eaton fire’s lasting impact on caregiving and decision-making based on interviews with mothers in Pasadena and Altadena. Read more here. \nBiography \nAntero Garcia is an Associate Professor in the Graduate School of Education at Stanford University and Vice President of the National Council of Teachers of English. His research explores the possibilities of speculative imagination and healing in educational research. Prior to completing his Ph.D.\, Garcia was an English teacher at a public high school in South Central Los Angeles. He has authored or edited more than a dozen books about the possibilities of literacies\, play\, and civics in transforming schooling in America. His recent books include All Around the Town: The School Bus as Educational Technology and Civics for the World to Come: Committing to Democracy in Every Classroom.
