SUMMARY:Crime\, Punishment\, & Immigration

This year has featured race-based stops and arrests\, unlawful raids\, and the heightened use of criminal law as a tool of immigration control. The line between “civil” immigration consequences and criminal punishment continues to erode. \nJoin us for a dialogue with Raha Jorjani\, from the Alameda County Public Defenders\, and Professor Jennifer Chacón\, our own faculty expert on the intersection of immigration and criminal law\, to examine the current moment in crimmigration\, the real-world impacts on noncitizens\, and how lawyers are responding on the front lines and in the courts.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/crime-punishment-immigration/\n\nThis event is open to the public.\n\nRegister: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeovbdFdFW09lxnsQivjyXETbiWtIu8CxTTC5fqXQ2Iyg7RZw/viewform

SUMMARY:Second-Order Constitutional Theory
DESCRIPTION:Watch the event \nA sophisticated legal thinker who wishes to work out a fully developed approach to constitutional adjudication must choose two theories\, not one. The first choice is familiar. What is the best approach for finding right answers to constitutional disputes? The leading competitors are familiar\, too: theories such as originalism\, pluralism\, moral readings\, and common law constitutionalism. It turns out\, though\, that a sophisticated legal thinker must also make a second theoretical commitment. For unless one takes the implausible view that every single case is an evidentiary wipeout under their preferred first-order theory\, something more will sometimes be necessary to decide a case. That something is a second-order theory of constitutional adjudication: a theory that does not purport to make any interpretation more (or less) correct\, constitutionally speaking\, yet still guides a decisionmaker after their preferred first-order interpretive theory has run out. In this constitutional conversation\, Professor Aaron Tang will make the case for greater attention to the choice among second-order constitutional theories. He will argue that the unspoken\, second-order theory embraced by today’s Supreme Court—the 51-49 rule\, under which each justice votes for the outcome they think is supported by more first-order evidence than any other outcome\, no matter how slight the difference—is as responsible for the acrimony over today’s Court as the first-order clash between originalism and its competitors. That claim\, if proven\, creates an intriguing possibility: armed with a better second-order theory\, judges who disagree vehemently over how to interpret the Constitution might still find their way to consensus in some of the most weighty and difficult cases of the day. \nProfessor Tang’s forthcoming article\, which forms the basis of the presentation\, is available here.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/second-order-constitutional-theory/\n\nThis event is open to the public.\n\nRegister Today!: https://forms.gle/ckNuWmfPf7zpR1nd8

SUMMARY:The Public Defense Crisis and the Future of the Sixth Amendment
DESCRIPTION:Sixty-three years ago\, on January 15\, 1963\, the United States Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Gideon v. Wainwright\, 372 U.S. 335 (1963). As we reflect on the meaning of the Sixth Amendment in today’s reality\, an esteemed and experienced panel of experts will consider the legacy of Gideon and its implications on the legal profession\, our community and our nation’s future. The panel will discuss public defender workload challenges\, limitations of the court’s ability to pay appointed counsel in panel systems like federal Criminal Justice Act (CJA) attorneys\, and doctrinal interpretations of the right to counsel under the Sixth Amendment.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/the-public-defense-crisis-and-the-future-of-the-sixth-amendment/\n\nThis event is open to the public.\n\nRegister Today!: https://forms.gle/mJg3uMNEEAbB2U739

SUMMARY:Executive Use of the Military\, Domestically and Abroad: A Conversation with Professor Jack Goldsmith
DESCRIPTION:This event is open to the Stanford community (students\, faculty\, and staff) and requires registration. Lunch will be provided to registered attendees. \n\nThe Trump administration’s use of military personnel within the United States and military force beyond our borders\, presents significant and urgent questions concerning the reach of executive power. The administration has deployed National Guard forces in American cities and launched military attacks on alleged drug traffickers in international waters. Additionally\, President Trump has made repeated reference to the possibility of invoking the Insurrection Act to deploy the American military for domestic law enforcement purposes\, against American citizens. The Neukom Center for the Rule of Law is pleased to welcome Stanford Law Visiting Professor and Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution Professor Jack Goldsmith for a discussion of the presidential use of the military and its implications for executive power and democracy with Professors Bernadette Meyler and Diego Zambrano.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/executive-use-of-the-military-domestically-and-abroad-a-conversation-with-professor-jack-goldsmith/\n\nThis event is open to the Stanford community.\n\nRegister Today!: https://forms.gle/eWH456Am51dtaWJ26

SUMMARY:Pushing the Two-State Path in Israel-Palestine
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a conversation between a Palestinian and the son of a Holocaust survivor who care deeply about the Jewish Israeli and Palestinian communities to which they are connected\, but who reject the status quo\, division\, and polarization that characterize much of our discourse about the situation in the region. These peacemakers from the OneVoice movement reject the dehumanizing “us vs. them” narratives that sow conflict and division and instead advocate for a shared future that unlocks the full potential of both peoples and ensures a Middle East where all can live in safety and dignity. They also seek to empower voices that foster depolarization in the discourse in order build support for actionable solutions that promote Israeli-Palestinian coexistence.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/onevoice-peaceworks/\n\nThis event is open to the Stanford community.\n\nRegister Today!: https://forms.gle/wioSW1ikzHfXi5bN6

SUMMARY:Wellness Week 2025: Why Joy Matters and How to Choose Joy Every Day\, with Kelly McGonigal
DESCRIPTION:Joy is the human capacity to feel uplifted by something that is\, at its essence\, ‘good.’ Physiologically\, joy provides energy and helps you recover from stress. Mentally\, joy broadens your perspective and renews optimism. Socially\, joy bonds you to others and strengthens relationships. In hard times\, joy can be a reminder that life has meaning and that you matter. People rank joy as the feeling they most want more of in life—and also the emotion least under their control. \nWhat if joy isn’t something you have to wait for\, but something you can choose? Based on the latest research and insights from psychology and neuroscience\, this talk will introduce a fresh perspective on how joy works\, and practical strategies for harnessing the power of joy in everyday life. \nStanford alum and Graduate School of Business lecturer Kelly McGonigal is a psychologist whose work shows us how to experience hope\, connection\, and meaning—even when life is difficult. \nShe is the author of the international bestseller The Willpower Instinct\, The Upside of Stress\, and The Joy of Movement. \nThrough the Stanford Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education (CCARE)\, she helped create the Stanford Compassion Cultivation Training\, a program now taught worldwide to deepen people’s experience of empathy\, self-compassion\, and social connection. \nHer TED talk “How to Make Stress Your Friend”—which reveals how stress can be a catalyst for courage and compassion—is one of the most viewed TED talks of all time.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/wellness-week-2025-kelly-mcgonigal/\n\nThis is a Stanford Law School private/or invitation only event.\n\nRSVP for WW25 events: https://forms.gle/vJy4QgP3KqNwHZwa8
