SUMMARY:ESG vs. Investment Treaties: Can International Arbitration Adapt to the Climate Change Transition?
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Thursday 16 of April at 12:45 PM for a deep dive into one of the most pressing legal frontiers of our time. We are thrilled to welcome Scott Vesel\, Partner at Three Crowns\, to discuss whether the traditional world of investment treaties can survive—and adapt to—the global climate transition. As the “Environmental” pillar of ESG moves from a corporate buzzword to a central catalyst in multi-billion dollar mining and energy disputes\, the rules of the game are being rewritten. This session will explore how international arbitration is transforming from a shield for investor rights into a high-stakes arena where climate commitments and state regulatory power collide. \nThis isn’t just a debate for international lawyers; it’s a masterclass in the systemic and commercial evolution of global markets. We will focus specifically on how the “E” and “G” of ESG are reshaping corporate governance\, investor due diligence\, and the very calculation of damages in the energy sector. Whether you are interested in the “Regulatory Collision” between states and investors or the commercial realities of the Energy Transition\, this session offers an expert look at how the legal landscape is being redrawn for a sustainable global economy.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/esg-vs-investment-treaties-can-international-arbitration-adapt-to-the-climate-change-transition/\n\nThis is a Stanford Law School community event.\n\nhttps://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc_mwUNL1n_YuiuRBqIs-_HRvlNnCXMP4hFdsGvbVHl2liy_g/viewform?usp=publish-editor: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc_mwUNL1n_YuiuRBqIs-_HRvlNnCXMP4hFdsGvbVHl2liy_g/viewform?usp=publish-editor

SUMMARY:SIAA Guest Lecture by Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP: Powering the Future: Energy and Technology Disputes in International Arbitration
DESCRIPTION:The global energy landscape is shifting faster than ever\, and with that transition comes a new wave of complex legal friction. As we pivot from fossil fuels to renewables\, the intersection of Energy and Technology is becoming the new frontier for International Arbitration. \nIn an era where technology is the energy strategy\, the legal community must adapt. Resolving these disputes requires more than just a deep dive into the law; it requires an understanding of the code\, the chemistry\, and the climate goals driving the change. \nThe Stanford International Arbitration Association (SIAA) is honored to host a guest lecture featuring partners from Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP on April 23 at 12:45PM. Kristen Young\, Shaimaa Hussein\, Grégoire Bertrou\, and Matthias Schrader will convene at Stanford Law School to analyze the intersection of international arbitration\, energy transition\, and emerging technologies. \nLunch will be provided by Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/siaa-guest-lecture-by-willkie-farr-gallagher-llp-powering-the-future-energy-and-technology-disputes-in-international-arbitration/\n\nThis is a Stanford Law School community event.\n\nRegister: https://forms.gle/3oRwBUkiPJjdLCTR7

SUMMARY:"The Alabama Solution" Screening
DESCRIPTION:All progressive movements in the United States come face-to-face with the repression of the US carceral system\, which systematically extracts profit from Black and Brown communities\, immigrants\, and the working poor. Grassroots organizing across the country teach us of the upmost importance of organizing locally against the carceral system\, and the ever-present need to educate working people on the current state of incarceration. Please join student organizers and graduate workers for a discussion and film screening of “The Alabama Solution\,” a recent film highlighting the courageous general strike across Alabama state prisons. We will contextualize this film screening in the current local fights against incarceration in the Bay Area with speakers from the Stanford Prison Abolition and Resource Coalition (SPARC)\, Stanford Jail and Prison Education Program (SJPEP)\, Stanford Decarceration Collective (SDC)\, and Critical Carceral Studies Collective. \nPlease join us on Thursday April 23\, at 5 PM (location TBD) for this event. Food and beverages will be provided!\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/the-alabama-solution-screening/\n\nThis event is open to the Stanford community.

SUMMARY:Local Power: A Symposium on Local Protections for Civil Rights
DESCRIPTION:Join the Stanford Journal for Civil Rights & Civil Liberties (SJCRCL) and the Stanford Law and Policy Review (SLPR) for a one-day symposium at Stanford Law School on Sunday\, April 26th\, 2026\, exploring the role and future of local and state actors in protecting and enhancing civil rights and liberties. Listen and learn from local practitioners and progressive leaders in education\, immigration\, and the role of lawyers promoting civil rights!  \nLocal and state governments\, courts\, and constitutions are increasingly being leveraged by progressive advocates as sources and avenues to safeguard civil rights and civil liberties. In the current political moment\, the federal government and federal courts – including the U.S. Supreme Court – are actively reticent\, if not hostile\, to attempts to protect the hard-fought rights of previous generations. The Supreme Court\, in recent years\, has eroded affirmative action and abortion rights\, among others. Local actors throughout American history have often offered protections distinct from\, and often more expansive than\, those found in the U.S. Constitution. \nJoin us for a fireside chat with Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson & Devon Gray ‘19\, SLS Alum and President of End Poverty in California\, on leveraging local resources for the public good!\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/local-power-a-symposium-on-local-protections-on-civil-rights/\n\nThis event is open to the public.\n\nRegister: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1QD1BGsQaqUu5Vzx2P_UH9quILNbgRHRsn8M6OEt2CYw/viewform?ts=69d9800e&edit_requested=true

SUMMARY:Ex Parte Young Redux
DESCRIPTION:When the main challenge to Texas’s then-unconstitutional abortion ban failed after a restrictive Supreme Court ruling in 2021 because there was no appropriate state official for the plaintiffs to sue\, one professor wrote that “[w]ere it not for sovereign immunity\, the logical defendant . . . would have been the state of Texas.”  This Constitutional Conversation draws from research challenging that assumption in the face of ascendant state “bounty” schemes\, like S.B. 8\, that rely on members of the public to implement unconstitutional laws.  Professor Crocker’s article Ex Parte Young Redux explores the development of the doctrine permitting federal courts to enjoin state officials from enforcing unlawful state statutes—and advocates extending that doctrine to allow suits against states themselves in limited circumstances.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/ex-parte-young-redux/\n\nThis event is open to the public.\n\nRegister Today!: https://forms.gle/FhhLpX4W28jW9Cha7

SUMMARY:A Conversation with SCRJ’s Bremond Fellows: Constitutionality of Federalizing the National Guard and Implications of the California Racial Justice Act
DESCRIPTION:Is the President’s decision to federalize the National Guard to support federal law enforcement justiciable? How should courts scrutinize the factual predicates and potential pretexts of a presidential federalization? And\, how does the California Racial Justice Act (CA RJA) change what evidence litigants can present for showing discrimination in criminal cases to challenge their sentences? How does the CA RJA—and similar legislation before it—change the causation requirement for showing discrimination? \nPlease join the Stanford Center for Racial Justice’s Harry Bremond-Wilson Sonsini Foundation Student Fellows—Brionna Bolaños\, JD `27\, and Dayle Chung\, JD `27—who will discuss their research on these timely issues\, followed by a Q&A with the audience. \nThe Harry Bremond-Wilson Sonsini Foundation Student Fellowship offers 2Ls and 3Ls at Stanford Law School a unique dual learning experience that immerses them in racial justice work through a wide range of impactful opportunities. Applications for the 2026–27 cohort are now open—apply by May 8 and learn more about the fellowship here.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/a-conversation-with-scrjs-bremond-fellows-constitutionality-of-federalizing-the-national-guard-and-implications-of-the-california-racial-justice-act/\n\nThis event is open to the public.\n\nRegister: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScWkpfyLhN6s1OAPv5ZkC8niUxP20OMvvBogXSYeluuV8TKTA/viewform?usp=dialog

SUMMARY:Elements of Policy Analysis Workshop: Introduction to Systems Thinking
DESCRIPTION:Virtually every public policy has causes and consequences beyond those that are intended or immediately visible. This is true of criminal law policies that use algorithmic predictions of flight before trial; environmental policies involving greenhouse gas emissions and conventional pollutants; and social and health policies that address homelessness\, institutional racism\, and the distribution of Covid vaccines\, to name just a few examples. The causes of the problems that these policies seek to address are complex. As a result\, these policies often fail and sometimes have unintended adverse consequences. “Systems thinking” is a framework that describes the web of associations in which such policies reside\, with the goals of understanding the multiple causes of problems and designing policies that lead to stable\, positive changes. Understanding systems thinking and systems change is a core skill for policymakers. Participants in the workshop are expected to do about an hour’s advance work. \nTaught by Paul Brest\, Director of the Stanford Law and Policy Lab.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/elements-of-policy-analysis-workshop-introduction-to-systems-thinking/\n\nThis event is open to the Stanford community.\n\nClick here to RSVP: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe8bKpttUG65EIbGIs1f7jWB8MuXCltaR6BcVWXAdxxMA4yoQ/viewform?usp=dialog

SUMMARY:Law Power: A Conversation with Professor Mark Jia
DESCRIPTION:A lunch talk with Prof. Mark Jia (Georgetown Law) on his latest scholarship on “law power.” \nInternational relations scholars have long debated the military\, economic\, and cultural dimensions of national power.  Yet in new age of great power competition\, we lack a general theory of national legal power comparable to these more familiar forms of national power.  Drawing on legal scholarship across many specific settings\, this talk introduces a general concept of law power—a nation-state’s ability to use law to affect others to get what it wants.  Law power can be soft\, hard\, or sharp\, and can involve local\, foreign\, or international law. In today’s juridified geopolitics\, law power is a leading form of national power.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/law-power-a-conversation-with-professor-mark-jia/\n\nThis is a Stanford Law School community event.\n\nRSVP: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScY49uJk9GMNaEHj4XfWVVCEdQywsW4dT6eRYvN6s6soGgmSw/viewform?usp=publish-editor

DESCRIPTION:Join ACS for a Beyond the Doctrine talk with Professor David A. Sklansky\, a series that explores open questions within current legal doctrine. \nProfessor Sklansky will discuss evidentiary instructions\, exploring the legal fields assumptions about their efficacy. SUMMARY:The Trump Presidency and the Rule of Law
DESCRIPTION:This panel brings together leading constitutional scholars to discuss executive power and its relationship to the rule of law in the contemporary United States. Using the presidency of Donald Trump as a general point of reference\, the conversation will explore how executive authority is defined\, exercised\, and constrained within the constitutional system. Panelists will reflect on the interaction between the presidency and other institutions\, including courts and Congress. The discussion will be open-ended\, engaging with broader questions about constitutional limits\, the conditions under which executive power expands or contracts\, and the challenges of maintaining accountability in periods of political polarization. There will be dedicated time for Q&A.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/the-trump-presidency-and-the-rule-of-law/\n\nThis event is open to the public.

SUMMARY:Advocating for Political Prisoners: Learning from the Political Prisoners Support Team
DESCRIPTION:The Political Prisoners Support Team (PPST) is a groundbreaking initiative launched by the World Liberty Congress\, designed to provide guidance and support to families and relatives of political prisoners across the globe. Activists and political leaders are often imprisoned simply for defending fundamental freedoms\, only to face inhumane treatment and torture once behind bars. This leaves their families struggling with the agonizing uncertainty of how to help. Drawing from these same lived experiences\, our team has developed proven strategies to navigate and address these crises. Our mission is to empower families of political prisoners with the tools\, knowledge\, and strategies they need to advocate effectively for their loved ones’ freedom. Please join the Neukom Center for the Rule of Law for a lunch and zoom with Lilian Tintori and Berta Valle\, two of the leaders of PPST\, to learn more about the legal framework around political imprisonment\, how PPST advocates with families for release\, and what challenges prisoners face after release.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/advocating-for-political-prisoners-learning-from-the-political-prisoners-support-team/\n\nThis is a Stanford Law School community event.

SUMMARY:AI Buildout and Populism
DESCRIPTION:The AI buildout is running headlong into a political backlash that tech and policy are not prepared for. Data center opposition is surging across both parties and all levels of government\, while the macro debate about whether AI will create broad prosperity or mass displacement is playing out in viral essays and market selloffs in real time. AI will only become more salient in upcoming election cycles. \nWhat does an “AI for all Americans” agenda look like\, and can such a vision be imagined before anti-AI populism becomes a dominant political force shaping tech and infrastructure policy?  Will democratic legitimacy become the third constraint\, after chips and energy\, on the American AI buildout?\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/ai-buildout-and-populism/\n\nThis event is open to the public.\n\nRegister: https://forms.gle/kNMz7ULv8cNLJAmk7

SUMMARY:Lawyers’ Monopoly Webinar Series 3: The Comparative Lens
DESCRIPTION:A new volume\, edited by Rhode Center Co-Directors and Stanford Law School professors David Freeman Engstrom and Nora Freeman Engstrom (and available open access on Cambridge Core)\, brings together leading legal scholars and practitioners to propose new conceptual frameworks for reform\, drawing lessons from other professions\, industries\, and places\, both within the United States and across the world. Rethinking the Lawyers’ Monopoly: Access to Justice and the Future of Legal Services seeks to help shape and steer the coming revolution in the legal services marketplace. \nTo bring these discussions off the page\, the Rhode Center has launched a four-part webinar series exploring various facets of the lawyers’ monopoly. Our first session sets the stage\, considering diverse frameworks to guide how we think about the changing market for legal services. The second focuses on existing reforms in the market for legal services. This third session applies a comparative lens\, focusing on lessons to be learned from other industries and other places\, regarding both loosening restrictions on the legal services market and responding to the rise of new providers and technologies. \nWe invite you to register for the entire webinar series: \n\nLawyers’ Monopoly Webinar Series 1: Conceptualizing Legal Services Regulation\nLawyers’ Monopoly Webinar Series 2: Lessons from the Field: On-the-Ground Efforts to Effect Positive Regulatory Innovations\nLawyers’ Monopoly Webinar Series 3: The Comparative Lens\nLawyers’ Monopoly Webinar Series 4: TBA\n\n \n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/the-comparative-lens/\n\nThis event is open to the public.\n\nRSVP Now!: https://stanford.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_SDFp9lBOThGrXeABlffRaA

SUMMARY:Legal History in Times of Crisis
DESCRIPTION:On May 15\, 2026\, the Stanford Center for Law and History will host its eighth annual conference\, “Legal History in Times of Crisis.” Our contemporary world is in crisis—on this much\, there is widespread agreement. But the nature\, scope\, and causes of our present crisis—indeed\, crises—are subject to fierce debate\, whether they be crises of democracy\, technology\, the rule of law\, capitalism\, public information and knowledge\, local ecology\, or global climate. Crisis is\, at its roots\, a historical concept\, deriving from the Greek krisis: a turning point. \nThe conference will bring together scholars of law and history to examine crises of the past across time periods and geographies\, focusing\, in particular\, on political\, economic\, and environmental turning points. Topics spanning these three modes of crisis include: turbulent transitions and periods of marked instability\, uncertainty\, and/or violence; inequalities in the social distribution of crisis; perceptions of crisis; systems and institutions prone to crisis; typologies of crisis; seedbeds for future crises; generative possibilities of crisis; and the utility of history in times of crisis—that is\, what good is history during a crisis? \nFor more information visit the conference website.\n\nhttps://conferences.law.stanford.edu/legal-history-in-times-of-crisis/\n\nThis event is open to the public.
