SUMMARY:Why Nothing Works: Fukuyama and Dunkelman on the Abundance Paradox
DESCRIPTION:In an era of unprecedented material wealth and technological capability\, why do our institutions seem increasingly incapable of delivering basic services? Why does it take a decade to build a train station\, or years to acquire permits for housing construction? \nJoin renowned political scientist Francis Fukuyama and author Marc Dunkelman for an illuminating conversation exploring one of the defining puzzles of our time: the growing gap between our society’s abundant resources and our declining ability to get things done. Drawing on Dunkelman’s latest book and Fukuyama’s decades of work on political order and institutional decay\, this fireside chat will explore the root causes of institutional sclerosis – from bureaucratic bloat to the rise of the “vetocracy” – and discuss what it might take to rebuild state capacity and restore our ability to solve collective problems in the 21st century. \nCo-sponsored by the Stanford Abundance Group. \nThe Stanford Bookstore will be onsite selling copies of Why Nothing Works by Marc Dunkelman.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/why-nothing-works-fukuyama-and-dunkelman-on-the-abundance-paradox/\n\nThis event is open to the public.\n\nRegister Today!: https://forms.gle/8A8t33A96WB8VVAS7

SUMMARY:Private Policing and Racial Power: A Discussion with Professor Ekow Yankah
DESCRIPTION:Join Criminal Law Society\, Stanford Criminal Justice Center\, Stanford Racial Justice Center\, Stanford Critical Legal Studies for a timely and thought-provoking conversation with Professor Ekow N. Yankah from the University of Michigan\, as he discusses his recent Stanford Law Review article examining the relationship between criminal law and private racist violence. \nIn his work\, Professor Yankah explores how criminal law not only responds to acts of private violence but can also legitimize and reinforce systems of racial power. By interrogating the ways in which legal doctrines sanction or fail to challenge racially motivated harm\, his analysis raises urgent questions about the role of the state\, the boundaries of policing\, and the moral foundations of punishment. \nEkow N. Yankah is the Thomas M. Cooley Professor of Law\, a professor of philosophy at the University of Michigan and the associate dean for faculty and research. His work focuses on questions of political and criminal theory and\, particularly\, questions of political obligation and justifications of punishment.  Yankah’s work has appeared in law review articles\, peer reviewed legal theory journals\, books\, and medical journals\, including NOMOS\, Ratio Juris\, Law and Philosophy\, Criminal Law and Philosophy\, Stanford Law Review\, Texas Law Review\, and the Harvard Law & Policy Review\, among others. \nWe invite the law school community to engage in this critical conversation on law\, race\, and power. \n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/private-policing-and-racial-power-a-discussion-with-professor-ekow-yankah/\n\nThis event is open to the public.\n\nRSVP Here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf6S9_hHYYeiOBCaN33PMcNJ70DexvCgwVNTU-L3ox9zVAbZw/viewform?usp=header

SUMMARY:Stanford Bootcamp: Building AI Agents in Law
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, Apr. 11 (9:00am- 5:00pm) – Sunday\, Apr. 12\, 2026 (9:00am-9:00pm) \nRegister by March 3\, 2026.\nLimited to Stanford students (Law\, CS/Engineering\, GSB). Space is limited. \n\nIn this hands-on accelerated class\, interdisciplinary teams design and prototype agentic AI applications at the intersection of technology and law. In small teams of Law\, CS/Engineering\, and Business students\, you’ll receive structured instruction and expert coaching to produce: 1) a functional prototype\, and 2) a pitch narrative\, both tuned for the Stanford Law x LLM Hackathon (Day 2) to compete versus other teams. \n\nHow do you turn the latest GenAI models into reliable\, enterprise-grade agents?\nWhich legal-tech problems are “startup-sized” now—and how do you pick the right wedge?\nHow do you design around model limits (accuracy\, privacy\, IP\, compliance) to ship safely?\n\nYou’ll tackle these questions with guidance from lecturers and invited GenAI experts (past guests from OpenAI\, Google\, Apple\, and Meta). Working in small teams\, you’ll develop a GenAI startup concept\, then refine and pitch it at the open Stanford Law x LLM Hackathon (Day 2) to a panel of AI entrepreneurs and academics. No prior AI experience required. No academic credit is offered. \nClass taught by: \n\nJay Mandal is a Stanford CodeX fellow and Guest Lecturer (sixth year teaching this AI and law class at Stanford); was head M&A lawyer at Apple\, COO of SAP’s Analytics and AI Business\, and CEO/co-founder of Google Ventures-funded legal tech startup.\nRoland Vogl is Executive Director of both CodeX – the Stanford Center for Legal Informatics\, and the Stanford Program in Law\, Science and Technology\, and a Lecturer at Stanford Law School specializing in the areas of legal informatics\, IP law and innovation.\nAparna Sinha is a Stanford Engineering alum who has led AI product teams at Vercel and Capital One as SVP\, is an investor/advisor at PearVC\, and built a $B+ business at Google Cloud.\n\nQuestions? SUMMARY:Lawyers’ Monopoly Webinar Series 2: Lessons from the Field: On-the-Ground Efforts to Effect Positive Regulatory Innovations
DESCRIPTION:A new volume\, edited by Rhode Center Co-Directors and Stanford Law School professors David Freeman Engstrom and Nora Freeman Engstrom (and available open access on Cambridge Core)\, brings together leading legal scholars and practitioners to propose new conceptual frameworks for reform\, drawing lessons from other professions\, industries\, and places\, both within the United States and across the world. Rethinking the Lawyers’ Monopoly: Access to Justice and the Future of Legal Services seeks to help shape and steer the coming revolution in the legal services marketplace. \n\n\n\n\nTo bring these discussions off the page\, the Rhode Center has launched a four-part webinar series exploring various facets of the lawyers’ monopoly. Our first session sets the stage\, considering diverse frameworks to guide how we think about the changing market for legal services. This second session focuses on the existing market for legal services\, where numerous reforms are already off and running. A handful of states are leading the pack\, enacting revolutionary programs that open the legal profession to outside investment and permit nonlawyer provision of legal services. This webinar canvases a subset of existing reforms and surfaces lessons to help guide further experimentation. \n\nWe invite you to register for the entire webinar series: \n\nLawyers’ Monopoly Webinar Series 1: Conceptualizing Legal Services Regulation\nLawyers’ Monopoly Webinar Series 2: Lessons from the Field: On-the-Ground Efforts to Effect Positive Regulatory Innovations\nLawyers’ Monopoly Webinar Series 3: The Comparative Lens\nLawyers’ Monopoly Webinar Series 4: TBA\n\n \n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/lessons-from-the-field-on-the-ground-efforts-to-effect-positive-regulatory-innovations/\n\nThis event is open to the public.\n\nRSVP Now!: https://stanford.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_CyAYoGq_SLKP-nIu3SlpHg

SUMMARY:AI Agents x Law: Hands-On Workshop and Live Participatory Demo
DESCRIPTION:This hands-on workshop gives participants practical experience using AI agents for legal and professional tasks. Through guided demonstrations\, discussion\, individual exercises\, group activities\, and a capstone demo\, attendees will learn how modern agentic workflows can support research\, drafting\, analysis\, coordination\, and other high-value professional work in law and adjacent domains. \nThe session will focus on practical use of OpenAI Codex (Desktop or CLI)\, Anthropic Claude Cowork or Claude Code (Desktop or CLI)\, and Google Antigravity (Desktop) or Gemini CLI. Other agent setups may be accommodated with prior approval from the instructor. The workshop will also highlight workflow patterns that generalize across agents and platforms\, including Agent Skills\, a lightweight\, open format for extending AI agent capabilities. Guest speakers will share how they are already using AI agents in real professional settings. \nThe workshop will culminate in a live participatory multi-agent collaboration demo on the Interlateral.com professional network for agents\, where participants bring their own agents into a shared working environment with other participants and their agents. \nBecause this is a hands-on session\, in-person participants must arrive with a supported or approved AI agent already functioning before the workshop begins. Additional setup tutorials\, walkthroughs\, and guidance for supported agent options will be published at ComputationalLaw.org in advance of the workshop\, and free live help sessions will also be offered there before the event. \nIn-person participation is by invitation only due to limited space and the prerequisite of having a working agent. Request an invitation here.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/ai-agents-x-law-hands-on-workshop-and-live-participatory-demo/\n\nThis is a Stanford Law School private/or invitation only event.\n\nRequest invitation here.: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScAQvhfTRdYGizN-ODgzVsOHRVVRUpouBfC7BPHRGQu2EkqmQ/viewform

SUMMARY:Rules\, Patterns\, and Hybrids
DESCRIPTION:Our goal is to initiate a conversation around a foundational divide in artificial intelligence: the relationship between rule-based (deterministic) systems and the probabilistic (pattern-driven) systems underlying most machine learning. This dichotomy is often assumed – and even bridged through neuro-symbolic strategies\, but it is only rarely explicitly interrogated. We believe that this divide is not just a matter of current IT strategy in legaltech and other applications; it shapes the structure of many decision-making systems\, including traditional jurisprudence and human cognition. \nOur discussion will range from exploring the theoretical basis for using the different strategies as decision making tools\, through practical considerations such as development and implementation costs and impacts\, and on to examples of specific applications that choose and blend the core strategies.  The session will be guided as it progresses through these topics but will not have formal panels or speakers. This conversation is intended to be a starting point\, allowing experts in different pieces of this inquiry to share knowledge and find connections that can help advance our understanding of these critical foundations of contemporary life. Through this exchange\, we hope to spark collaborations\, research initiatives\, and projects that deepen our understanding of how these systems shape modern decision-making. \nOrganizers: \n Jeannette Eicks\, Associate Dean and Professor Law\, The Colleges of Law\nOliver Goodenough\, Stanford CodeX Affiliate\, Research Professor\, Vermont Law and Graduate School and Senior Lecturer\, Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/rules-patterns-and-hybrids/\n\nThis is a Stanford Law School private/or invitation only event.\n\nRequest invitation here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdywRXwmTljD5gTo_hShNt2twegiy11zi1YY5dov_wIXsvu1w/viewform

DESCRIPTION:When the main challenge to Texas’s then-unconstitutional abortion ban failed after a restrictive Supreme Court ruling in 2021 because there was no appropriate state official for the plaintiffs to sue\, one professor wrote that “[w]ere it not for sovereign immunity\, the logical defendant . . . would have been the state of Texas.”  This Constitutional Conversation draws from research challenging that assumption in the face of ascendant state “bounty” schemes\, like S.B. 8\, that rely on members of the public to implement unconstitutional laws.  Professor Crocker’s article Ex Parte Young Redux explores the development of the doctrine permitting federal courts to enjoin state officials from enforcing unlawful state statutes—and advocates extending that doctrine to allow suits against states themselves in limited circumstances.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/ex-parte-young-redux/\n\nThis event is open to the public.\n\nRegister Today!: https://forms.gle/FhhLpX4W28jW9Cha7

SUMMARY:A Conversation with SCRJ's Bremond Fellows: Constitutionality of Federalizing the National Guard and Implications of the California Racial Justice Act
DESCRIPTION:Is the President’s decision to federalize the National Guard to support federal law enforcement justiciable? How should courts scrutinize the factual predicates and potential pretexts of a presidential federalization? And\, how does the California Racial Justice Act change what evidence litigants can present for showing discrimination in criminal cases to challenge their sentences under the RJA? How does the RJA—and other similar legislation before it—change the causation requirement for showing discrimination? Please join the Stanford Center for Racial Justice’s Harry Bremond-Wilson Sonsini Foundation Student Fellows who will discuss their research on these timely issues\, followed by a Q&A with the audience.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/a-conversation-with-scrjs-bremond-fellows-constitutionality-of-federalizing-the-national-guard-and-implications-of-the-california-racial-justice-act/\n\nThis event is open to the public.

SUMMARY:Elements of Policy Analysis Workshop: Introduction to Systems Thinking
DESCRIPTION:Virtually every public policy has causes and consequences beyond those that are intended or immediately visible. This is true of criminal law policies that use algorithmic predictions of flight before trial; environmental policies involving greenhouse gas emissions and conventional pollutants; and social and health policies that address homelessness\, institutional racism\, and the distribution of Covid vaccines\, to name just a few examples. The causes of the problems that these policies seek to address are complex. As a result\, these policies often fail and sometimes have unintended adverse consequences. “Systems thinking” is a framework that describes the web of associations in which such policies reside\, with the goals of understanding the multiple causes of problems and designing policies that lead to stable\, positive changes. Understanding systems thinking and systems change is a core skill for policymakers. Participants in the workshop are expected to do about an hour’s advance work. \nTaught by Paul Brest\, Director of the Stanford Law and Policy Lab.\n\nhttps://law.stanford.edu/event/elements-of-policy-analysis-workshop-introduction-to-systems-thinking/\n\nThis event is open to the Stanford community.\n\nClick here to RSVP: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe8bKpttUG65EIbGIs1f7jWB8MuXCltaR6BcVWXAdxxMA4yoQ/viewform?usp=dialog
