• Acquisition: Karl Chapman, chief executive of Riverview Law, reports that RL has acquired CliXLEX, a New Jersey-based knowledge automation business. Financial details were not announced. The new acquisition will help RL develop the use of artificial intelligence in the legal market, said Chapman in a press release.

“The deal is a major step towards the creation of ‘vertical assistants’ that will improve the quality and speed of lawyers’ and paralegal work while freeing them to focus on key tactical and strategic matters,” he said.

Earlier this year, RL  partnered with the University of Liverpool to “leverage” UL’s AI expertise.

• Evolve Law Launch: Evolve Law has debuted its new online community and website, “designed to promote collaboration between entrepeneurs and law firms and attorneys and speed adoption of new technology.” Founding members include ALT Legal, Avvo, Themis Solutions Inc. (Clio), CrowdLaw, CuroLegal, Domain Skate, Davis Wright Tremain, eBrevia, FactBox, Good2BSocial, Hire an Esquire, Hotshot Legal, IntheBenches, LawLytics, Legal Hero, NextGenJustice, Patdek, Privileged Communications, Traklight and Valcu.

The goal is “to catalyze the exchange of ideas between legal technology developers and potential users by creating a vibrant and active digital community,” said  Phoenix-based Mary Juetten, co-founder of Evolve Law and CEO of Traklight. The company also plans to expand its online Legal Tech ToolKit  to showcase innovative products and serve as a resource for to extend the use of technology in their businesses and practices, she said.

Said CodeX activist Dan Lear, Avvo’s director of industry relations: “Leveraging technology as a tool to increase access to the law is what Avvo is all about, and we believe that technology adoption within the legal community is critical to improving access to legal services for people everywhere.”

• Above the Law 1 2 3:  Bloomberg Law’s David Perla (a frequent speaker at CodeX) is profiled in Sean Doherty’s new weekly  Above the Law technology column. Perla co-founded legal process outsourcing firm Pangea3 with Sanjay Kamlani, which was sold to Thomson Reuters. Perla has also worked as a transactional lawyer, did a stint at Monster.com, and served as chairman/CEO of Matterhorn Transactions Inc. Along the way, he gathered recognitions from the likes of The Wall Street Journal, The American Lawyer (among others) and he made the Legal Rebel roster at the American Bar Association, noted Doherty.  Perla’s now president of the legal division at Bloomberg Law.

On Sept. 29, ATL will launch Perla’s new column.  It “will look at the possibilities that result from the competitive pressures presented to the legal industry resulting from new technology, the economy, or paradigm shifts,” explained Doherty, an attorney and the former technology editor at ALM’s Law Technology News.

3: Speaking of ATL, Ed Walters, CEO and co-founder of Fastcase will present the keynote at the inaugural ATL Academy for Private Practice, on  Oct. 2.  It will be a full day conference designed for small law firms, to help them innovate and grow, ATL notes. It also targets “Big Law lawyers aspiring to strike out on their own.”
