For starters, Nicole Shanahan, who is wrapping up her Residential Fellow term at CodeX, had a story published by Los Angeles Daily Journal. Her essay, “Transition to Legal AI Will Happen Suddenly,” was printed on June 7.

“The legal system is behind the a curve in terms of how it manages information, and that is largely due to the fact that legal information is complex and exists predominatedly in natural language,” she noted in the article.

Shanahan, a member of the California bar, is also the founder and CEO of ClearAccessIP.

Jobst Elster (InsideLegal.com) checks in to note that NetDocuments has announced ndOffice v1.8. He notes that the upgrade “advances NetDocuments’ and Microsoft’s cloud-first strategy and office application integration for the law firm and corporate legal market.”

Elster also alerted us to the merger of Fireman & Company and Gimbal Canada, generating a new entity, Peformance Excellence Group. It will focus on “pricing, legal process improvement, legal project management and legal [knowledge management] expertise for law firms and corporate legal.” Tom Baldwin had recently joined Fireman (He previously served as CIO or CKO for Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft LLP; Reed Smith LLP; and Sheppard, Mullin, Richter, & Hampton LLP.)
