Fresh Intelligentsia: Six Reports

Lots to report today! First: When Hannah Samendinger was recommended to be featured in ALM’s Women of Legal Tech series, I was a bit skeptical—because she was fresh out of law school. The series is designed to provide advice to mostly-young women who are in the early stages of my career. But my hesitations were wisked away when I read her questionnaire! She has much to say and many to inspire.  Check it out here. (Free, but registration required.)

Second: Nicole Shanahan tipped me to news from Clause, a legal tech startup, that has demo’d to Dentons. Clause is a IoT-enabled legal contract.

It “took the form of a data-augmented natural language supply agreement. Or in other words, a legal contract that responded to external information that was fed into it. The company is able to talk about it now following their announcement of an investment deal from Nextlaw Labs and Seedcamp earlier this month,” says the Artificial Lawyer blog. (Read “Dynamic Contracts: Clause and the New Era of IlT-Enabled Legal Agreements.” (No author is cited.) Houman Shadab is the co-founder and COO of clause.

Third. Speaking of contract startups, keep your eye out for the forthcoming Startup Snapshot with Edward Taylor and synergist.io. Coming soon!

Fourth. Tomorrow’s  (Thursday) CodeX meeting will feature two presentations: 1) John Nay, president of PredictGov, Inc. It is co-founded by Nay, our friend Oliver Goodenough and J.B. Ruhl. PredictGov combines proprietary machine learning and natural language processing technologies with a deep knowledge of law and legal institutions to help lawyers and policy professionals craft more effective work products focused on legislation and litigation.

2) Anton Tarasiuk and Yurii Doiichuk will demo Legal_IT_Bot, a chat game where plawyer solve tasks, make decisions, enter into agreements and learn basics of law.  1:30 p.m. (Pacific). You can access it remotedly if you aren’t at the campus. To receive the weekly invites, click here for the link: https://mailman.stanford.edu/mailman/listinfo/codex_group_meetings.

Fifth. If you are anywhere near Philly, it’s not too late to attend the Above The Law Academy for Private Practice Thursday and Friday.

Our colleague Gurinder “Gary” Sangha has organized the pre-conference Thursday, which includes a media advice panel and a innovation awards event.

And the Friday sessions are terrific!  Details here.
