Summary

Joan Petersilia is an internationally renowned criminologist who has spent over 30 years studying the performance of U.S. criminal justice agencies and has been instrumental in affecting sentencing and corrections reform in California and throughout the United States. In 2014, she was honored with the Stockholm Prize in Criminology (the Nobel Prize in criminology) for her work on prisoner reentry and supporting ex-offenders following release from prison. In this video, she first offers an overview of America’s prison challenges and then her research into prison challenges and the work that she and students at Stanford Law School have done on California’s historic prison realignment and Governor Brown’s new initiative to fund prisoner re-entry programs.
