James Madison’s Notes on the 1787 Constitutional Convention have acquired nearly unquestioned authority as the description of the U.S. Constitution’s creation. Yet the story may be more complicated than it appears. In her new and important book, Madison’s Hand: Revising the Constitutional Convention, historian Mary Bilder argues that Madison revised the Notes to a far greater extent than previously recognized, and explores the ways that those changes have impacted our understanding of the Constitutional Convention. Join the Constitutional Law Center for a discussion of Professor Bilder’s new book, with commentary by several of Stanford’s leading historians and constitutionalists.
