The mass shooting of dozens on the Las Vegas Strip on Sunday has renewed attention on the sale of firearms and the response to national incidents.

Jerry Bates, owner of Jerry’s Sports in Mount Zion, said large-scale shootings haven’t had an impact on his business in the past, and he wasn’t expecting that to change Monday.

A Stanford University study led by professor David Studdert noted the surges in handgun purchases that occur after a mass attack are characterized by a large number of female buyers and “first gun buyers.” The study focused on California, where gun sales information is tracked closely and more readily available than other states.
