Discussion (1L): Free Speech and Internet Platforms (242V): This discussion seminar will examine the ways that internet and social media platforms regulate speech. We will explore the policies and case studies related to hate speech, incitement, indecency, disinformation, and child protection. Readings will include rulings from the Facebook Oversight Board as well as community standards from several other internet companies. We will be joined by the Global Head of Trust and Safety for YouTube at most sessions. Elements used in grading: Full attendance, reading of assigned materials, and active participation. Class meets: 5:15 PM-7:15 PM on Sept. 28, Oct. 5, Oct. 12, Oct. 19.
